Firewire. USB2 Nikon states the need for Firewire and a USB2 ports for connecting their super Coolscan 8000 ED to my G4. I have a PowerBook G4 with a Firewire port and two USB 1.1 ports. Can I just use the Firewire port alone, or do I have to use the USB port as well. I understand I can use the USB 1.1 port but it will be slower. Bottom line, I don't understand why Nikon state the need for both ports when it seems, and what I've read, that the Firewire port alone is all that is needed to connect the 8000 ED to my G4. Can I just use the Firewire port alone, and what will I be missing by not using the USB port? Thank you.

I also have a CoolScan 8000 and it only uses a single connector -- I use the Firewire because it's supposed to be faster than USB.

Either or is my understanding- the scanner will accept either. I can see no need for both.

Nikon 4.0.2 isn't supported on 10.5

I suggest you look at VueScan which does work under 10.5 and 10.6 with your scanner, and they have a free download to test first

USB cable from scanner to new Dell Optiplex 755

If you look carefully at the cable, you will notice it is a firewire cable (IEEE1394), not USB. You will need a firewire interface on your computer to use the Nikon scanner. It will not work with a USB port.
