Buy a name brand powder (like Electrosol or Cascade) and use less than full in the dispenser cup.
Do not use gel or tablet, ever.
Final option: (the perfect fix, expensive, but worth it... install a whole house water softener and cut the use amount of detergent in half that you use in both your dishwasher and clothes washer. You will love it.
If problems continue, have the heating element checked/replaced. When it fails, you will always get film/residue on dishes, especially your glassware, even if your water heater is set to the proper temp of 120 degrees.
Good Luck!

You may have something else going on with the plumbing if it is not draining well. That could easily cause isses. I have a low cost try that may help. I started the rinse cycle, once it was full of water, used 1 cup of white vinegar dumped it in the bottom and ran it through. 20 min. Then ran another rinse cycle to wash it down. Next load came out 5 stars! Just like new.

very good points. There are many possible causes. All you can do is start with the most likely. When we moved into our new house, we had that problem intermittantly. We eventually found that the softener backflush cycle was set too low. By the end of the week if we had a lot of usage, we ran out of softwater and had residue on the dishes.

Dishes aren't clean, lots of white dried on stuff on top of glasses and dishes

The problem is most likely that there is still water residue at the bottom of your machine. If the machine is not fully drained it picks up some of the residue and sprays that onto the dishes during the final rinse, leaving an unhealthy and unsightly film on everything.
Remove the bottom strainers plates and make sure that the outlet pipe is not kinked, that there is nothing obstructing the pipe or the pump or selector valve. If possible back flush through the outlet pipe and try draining the machine once more before using it again.

Dishwasher not cleaning dishes and leaves glasses with a white film

Hi,
There are several causes in dishwashers that make dishes come out with film on them or something of the sort. Here they are.
1 Water temperature should be 140 degrees. Your dishwasher should have a "sani" cycle that heats up the water into that range.
2 Most dishwashers were never engineered for liquid soap. So if you are using it, go to powder soap.
3 A rinse agent is definitely a big plus
4 In some parts of America, such as Florida, lime deposits build up in the machine and accumulate onto the dishes and glasses. It's a white film. It also accumulates in the parts of the machine and logs them. If this is the case. Run white vinigar in the machine.
Empty the machine.
Turn it on.
While the machine is filling with water, (not at the very very beginning as it will drain out existing water when it is started) put a quart of vinegar in and run it. If it has lime deposits it will greatly reduce them.

5 The spray arms may be jammed with pieces of food or other debris. make sure the holes in the arms are not obstructed.

That should do it.
Best, Mark

My dishwasher is leaving a white thick film on my dishes.

Check your inlet water quality. If hardness is noticed add salt as per the directions of the manufacturer. Refer user manual.

Check the rinse aid compartment and fill it with rinse aid as recommended by the manufacturer.

The dishwasher doesn't clean properly

Lots of possibilities...

1. the sprayer arm might be sticking and not moving, or moving very little. Check to see if you can spin it by hand. Listen when the machine is running and you should hear the sound of the spray changing as it rotates. Check for items that might be jamming the arm like silverware, cups, jar labels, etc.

2. the little holes in the sprayer arms could be clogged. Need to remove the arms and clean them.

3. If it has a spray arm in the top rack, check to see that the piping for that is not broken or missing any pieces.

4. Any filter screens inside the plumbing could be clogged. This would slow down the spray and result in the dishes not getting rinsed properly. Check the inside of the machine for any foreign objects (see #3 above).

5. The machine might not be emptying between portions of the cycle. After the wash cycle, see if it is draining by either checking for water coming out of the drain hose or by opening the machine before it should start filling up for the rinse cycle.

6. Machine could be overloaded. Or loaded with extremely dirty dishes. Or with foods that are hard to clean like grits or oatmeal.

7. The machine could be improperly loaded. Bowls or platters blocking the spray. Tall objects like glasses and jars should not be loaded into the corners of the racks. The corners do no get a lot of spray and tall items can end up dirty.

My dishes come out with cloudy film on them.

From Whirlpool:

*Film is due to either etching or silica film. Silica film is a milky, rainbow-colored deposit and etching is a cloudy film. Sometimes there is a water/chemical reaction with certain types of glassware.
o Silica film and etching are permanent and cannot be removed. Both can occur in any automatic dish washing machine and result from a water/chemical reaction with certain types of glassware. They are caused by some combination of:
+Soft or softened water.
+Alkaline washing solution.
+Insufficient rinsing.
+Dishwasher overloading.
+Heat of drying.
+Long/hot cycles.

To slow the down this process:

*Use a minimum amount of detergent but not less than 1 tablespoon per load.
*Use a liquid rinse aid.
*Under load the dishwasher to allow thorough rinsing.
*Do not use heated drying.
*Wash glasses by hand.

Do the following:

1. do you use a rinse agent
2. clean out the drain.
3. if you have a food disposal, run hot water through it and turn it on to clear it out before you turn on the dishwasher. The dishwasher drains into that sink. If you notice food or dirty water backing up into you sink when the dishwasher is draining, then the sink could have a minor clog and is backing up and being re-sprayed onto your dishes.
Source(s):
Use SANIVAC to clean lime deposits and extend the life of your dishwasher. If you have heavy water.

Run your dishwasher empty and pour in a cup of bleach and a cup of white vinegar to get the residue out.....run a regular cycle.......How hot is your hot water tank set on? The hotter the water the better a dishwasher washes and rinses, be careful it's not to hot as your shower and other sinks also will get this hot water......cut your dish soap down and make sure to use a Jet Rinse Aid. Again, be sure to use a liquid soap, and rinse agent, powders will cause a caustic reaction. Hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
