Is this the engine model? Is it Briggs and Stratton? You will need to unbolt the cover or drill out rivet's to get cover off. Once removed you will see where cord enters. Go to a hardware store and purchase bulk cord same length or slightly longer than original. Install cord and tie off in a knot like original then wind in same direction as it was, then wind assembly in tension direction of spring( a few turns) then thread cord out hole in cover, put it through handle and tie it off in knot. Then reinstall cover. This can be tricky and you may get direction backwards at first, but don't give up, you can do it. Good luck!

Pull cord will not retract

You did not say which model of vacuum you have. Cord reels are a great feature on a vacuum, when they are working properly. If your cord goes bad or the cord reel isn't working correctly it may need to be replaced.

The pull cord on my jiffy ice auger model 30 has broke and I need a new one. I do not need a new ice aguer just the pull cord which is located at the top.

if you just need the cord -- most hardware stores do carry replacement cord ( sold by the foot ),, if you look in the chainsaw department you should be able to find the size that you need. as soon as you have the cord you can re spool the winding unit and this will restore the pull start function.
you can also buy the cord at your local lawn and garden shops, snowmobile shops or chainsaw shops.
if you have any further questions about this problem -- please feel free to ask,

The pull start on my line trimmer has pulled out i need to know what way the main shaft comes off to remove the casing so i can refit the starting line.

You should not have to remove the shaft to replace the pull cord on a trimmer, none that I know of anyway. On most models, the pull cord is in a small housing that is bolted to the side of the engine. Remove the housing and your there. What model trimmer do you have?

Replace pull cord on ryobi model cs30 weed wacker

Good fix, mrfixit-jerr! Also, if you remove the rear cover (4 screws) you can stabilize the crankshaft by inserting a screwdriver between the lobe of the shaft and the counterweight.

Replacing pull cord on troy built mower model # 8654r 4hp

Remove the housing covering the clutch. The cord spool can then be accessed. Replace the cord. Be careful that you maintain the proper spool spring tension. Check operation before reassembling
