You may need to replace the cmos battery, its a cr2032 3v button cell
Make sure all your expansion cards and memory are reseated.
Make sure all cables are reseated.
your power supply could be bad

If that doesn't work try this

Here is my fix for the dell dimension 4400 amber light problem. It works!
replace cmos battery.
then unplug power cord form wall about 5-10 secs.
then plug it back in, wait 5 secs.
If amber light comes on, press and hold power button until it goes out.

(with light out, press and hold power button while amber light comes on and goes off again holding power button 2-3 secs after light goes out.) repeat whats in parenthesis until computer turns on
it should only take about 6, 7 tries.

After the computer boots, you may want to setup cmos or boot into windows.
After you shutdown, unplug power cord for 5-10 secs then plug it back in.
Press and hold the power button, computer should come on.
I found that's the only way to turn on the computer.
If you shutdown and don't unplug power cord the computer may not boot, mine didn't.
Strange I'd say

Desktop: Gateway LX6810-01 PC will not power on. When I hit the Power button on the tower, a long continuous BEEP comes on and nothing appears on the monitor. After the BEEP, the On light (on tower)...

Thank you for using FixYa

I would try shutting down the computer in the normal way, and turning off the monitor.
Boot up and turn the monitor back on.
If it still doesn't work, then I would check the cables and power plugs and wall plugs.
Check the mouse and keyboard cable and any other cables plugged into the computer.
The next step requires a seperate monitor or laptop.
Try unplugging the monitor and pluging in another monitor. Most laptops have a common
VGA adaptor jack or even an Svideo jack.
If the other monitor does not work, Then take to a qualified technician for repair.
It could be your power supply in the computer or video controller.

I hope this was useful and please comment if this was helpful to you.

I turned off the computer by going to shut down earlier today I went to turn it back on this evening and the CPU won't turn on

hello, make sure nothing has come unplugged and that none of the buttons are stuck on. With that said if this is an older pc, your power supply inside the case might have went out. power supplies go out quite often, replacing them is not to bad just make sure you have the correct physical and power size. Also verify that it has the connectors for that particular motherboard.
hope this helps

If the power went while your computer was switched on, there are a few possible problems.
The main problem will be the damage to files, any open files and programs may have been damaged, these include system files damaged due to the computer not going through the correct shut down process.
You may also have damaged the Hard drive. This may be not just data damaged or lost, but also the heads would not have been able to "Park", so the disc surface could have been damaged.
Any of the components may also have been damaged, if there was a surge of power before it was cut off.
Does the computer show any life when switched on?. Fans turning, any disc activity , lights?
Does it make the beep before windows loads to show all is ok.
If you have signs of life, you may have just damaged the boot files.
You may be able to repair the MFT (google it :) ) or do a repair installation.
If you can write back with as much information as possible, we can take it from there

Melting plastic smell/ computer slow and shuts down after about 15mins

Hi there.
The reason you can smell burning plastic and why its shutting down after a short time is because its overheating. This can be caused by a build up of dust on the CPU fan, overtime with dust build up computers struggle to keep themselves cool and tend to shut down unexpectedly, chances are this is the problem with your machine, my advice would be to remove the power cord, open the side panel of the computer and clean all the dust away from inside the tower, do this with a soft, clean paintbrush making sure you remove the dust carefully and gently, also make sure the CPU fan and the heat sync behind it is completely free of dust or any other foreign objects.
Once you are happy that its clear of dust, close or return the side panel, plug in the power cord and turn the PC on, you may find that the PC will stay on for longer with the smell dramatically reduced.

Please post back with the results and thanks for using FixYa!!
