WARNING Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL.
http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules
Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source.
Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer.
While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive power and data cables IDE ,SATA
the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
Make sure all leads that are attached to your dvd \ cd floppy drives have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty.
Computers need power and data to travel through every working device to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error.
Even something as small as a faulty electrical or fan lead can cause you problems
Motherboard and a Hard Drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail.
Check all electrical power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working
Could be a problem with the Hard Drive or the Hard drives PCB

Check your BIOS. There's a setting there to change the Drive controller which allows the SATA drive to be recognized. I believe when I did it I had to change the RAID setting (even though I wasn't using RAID).

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: when I connect my seagate expansion external hard

either an issue with the hard disk, or with your system. Make sure the hard disk has power on it and if you can, it would help to test it on another computer to confirm if it works. If you have ruled out the possibility that it is the hard disk, next is review if the hard disk has system requirements you need to meet. If the requirements are met by your XP SP2 machine, you may try updating the computer's system software/chipset drivers and a BIOS update may also be necessary.

Dead hd wd caviar 80 gb

Is the "dead" hard drive 80GB? or 500GB?
I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive, or as an external drive. You can do these:
1. Disk Management (check the readablility):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not dead.
Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (format, expand the volume, assign a drive letter, etc.)
2. If necessary, test and fix it using Norton Utilities (download and run it):

Hi Angela ,
You' re probably facing a power or usb issue . Consider opening the enclosure ( will be lost , i presume ) and placing the drive in an external usb box ( available in any computer store starting from 20 $ ) to be reconnected to your pc . If this doesn' t help , it means your device is dead . There then still is a small opportunity to recover the lost data by using a recovery software like Recuva ( free ) or TenorShare Recovery ( payable ) .
This should help you solving your issue .
Best regards ,
fanaudi .

Getting message back up failed i/o device error Any help available?

Your attempt to write files to the disk-drive inside the external case has "failed" -- the data could not _correctly_ be written.

So, if your Passport is still under warranty, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has ended, it's possible to disassemble the case, remove the "dead" disk-drive, buy a replacement disk-drive, connect it, and reassemble it, and "reuse" the external case.

Were you using this on a PC? it may be using Fat or NTFS. If it's seeing the drive and you can't use it, it may be the filing system, I believe macs use a different one than PC's. I would copy the files "if possible" to another flash drive or computer and just re format the 320 gig drive, the mac will install the right filing system for the drive and it should be good to go.

Transfer data from a dead laptop to a new laptop

Do you have a usb to SATA connector? If so you can plug the old drive into the USB slot and it will act as a slave so you can pull the contents from the old drive to the new. The adapter is about 25.00 or If it was me I would invest into a pocket USB hard drive case that you can put your old drive into perminatly so you can always have a external hard drive for back up later after yo uhave moved the data over and reformatted it. The case is $25-$40.00.

Unresponsive harddrive

hi,
you have definitely got a dead HD (hard-drive) there, nothing you can do about it.
sounds like the force of the shock has damaged the HD beyond repair.
HD work by i high precision arm that reads data on a spinning platter, the chances are you have damaged the arm and the click is where the arm is trying to read the HD with no luck

sorry
