I am trying to attach my bike rack to the trailer hitch. The bolt that attaches the bike rack is slightly rusted. The threaded hole that the bolt goes into is also slightly rusted. The bolt will go in and it gets increasingly tougher to tighten the bolt. Half way to completely screwing in the bolt, it becomes too difficult to tighten it anymore. How do I get it to tighten all the way?
New bolt? or remove the rust on both my soaking in vinegar or a commercial solvent.
A brief Google search indicates that trailer hitches may have either a fine or coarse thread, and perhaps either metric or standard threading. Being able to get a bolt only part way into a threaded hole often means the threads don't match. I would recommend you visit a retailer that sells or rents trailers and hitches for assistance if you are still having difficulty, and absolutely do not force things.

Take the bolt out and clean it with a wire brush if you have one. Give it a good scrub, then lubricate the bolt. Best thing would be a thick type of grease, but if you don't have that, put some oil on the thread. If you don't have that, WD40 but it won't stay there for long.
