Horrible smell coming from the washing machine

The problem started a few weeks ago with our washing coming out smelling musty but we thought it might be because we were putting it on in the morning and then not emptying it out until the evening.  But now there is a 'standing water' smell constantly coming from the sink drain and from the back of the washing machine.

We have tried putting Mr Muscle down the sink, cleaning out the washing machine drawer, the washing machine filter (at the front of the machine) and putting a boil wash on.  However, nothing has worked and the smell is getting worse by the day and we can't now do any washing without it smelling horrendous.

Dynarod and a washing machine repair company have been to visit and they have replaced the pipe under the sink and installed a new hose for the washing machine. Once they left everything was fine and the smell seemed to have gone.  However, we ran a boil wash to clear any residue and the drum still smelt horrible.  Since then we have done a wash and unfortunately the smell is still there.

It can't be the water supply as the dishwasher would also smell. Please help! Do you think we just need a new machine? Our current machine is AEG and is probably nearing 8-10 years old. I'm not sure of the model as no currently at home but it is one where it is semi integrated.

thanks Lucy

IMPORTANT: Read thoroughly. DO NOT add detergent or other laundry products to this cycle.
1. Remove all items from the washer.
2. Open the dispenser drawer and 2/3 cup (160 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment. DO NOT use more than 2/3 cup (160mL) of bleach per cycle as this will lead to product damage.
3. Close the washer door and dispenser drawer.
4. Select the Clean Washer cycle or a full wash cotton 104 F wash (40 C). DO NOT use any higher temperature as this will cause unnecessary fumes
5. Press Start and allow cycle to complete.
6. If the bad odour persists, repeat the procedure 1 or 2 more times. This may be necessary if this is the first time you have run this cycle.
7. After the cycle is complete, leave the door open slightly to allow ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
8. Repeat the cleaning procedure monthly.
To maintain the washer freshness:
1. Use only HE High Efficiency detergent.
2. Leave the door open after each cycle to for better ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
3. Use warm / hot water in your machine unless the fabric you are washing requires cold.
4. Use the correct amount of fabric softener.
5. If your laundry room is damp, use a dehumidifier.
6. Clean the door seal of visible residue.

If you dont wash whites with clorine bleach, you may want to every once in a while. Clorine kills germs and backteria which can smell. washer pumps do not get 100% of the water out.

There is a musty smell in the maytag washer even b4 I fill it with water, I've disconneted the hoses & flushed with bleach that did not take care of it,Iv'e run washes without clothes in it...

When a moldy or musty smell develops in a washing machine, many times the smell is coming from the open areas of the agitator. Water along with soap and/or liquid softener sometimes splashes into an open agitator, and when the lid is closed it does not dry out. Instead, mold begins to form, and a musty smell wafts from inside the machine, even after the lid has been opened for an extended period of time. Until the mold is removed the washing machine will continue to smell bad, even if it is used and allowed to air dry with the lid open. The tub can also be the source of the smell. Lint can gather and collect in the holes, and when it does not dry fast enough it ends up smelling musty and moldy. Even the top of the rim can become moldy and musty, but proper cleaning can get rid of the odor.

So that said.To clean the machine, fill to just above the top row of holes in the tub.Add 2 cups of bleach.Let sit for 1-2 hours. Then let the machine run it`s wash cycle.Lastly use bleach water and a rag to wipe the machine down inside and out.If the agitator has a cup on top remove and clean with bleach.Leave the top open so the machine can dry.

Now it should smell better,if so use as normal, and leave the lid open when not in use.

Sears technician recommended not using liquid detergent. A week or so after we switched to powder the smell went away.

Clothes have a musty smell if left in the washer

Make shure to do a cleaning cycle. As well, wipe out the inside, the rubber gasket and the door when done washing for the day. We also have found that
leaving the door "Open" for several hours, when finnished, eliminates any future
smells.

Musty smell, but can't tell from where

I have the same problem with a 3 month old ge front loading washer.after 1 month it started off smelling musty..I thought it was my imagination, now at 3 months old our clothes smell so bad I think we might just have to buy new clothes! everytime I wash a load the clothes smell worse and now you can even smell it just walking into our closet 2 floors up. A new washing washing machine should NOT be doing this! so far leaving the door open in between washes has helped a little but I plan on tipping it back and finding the hidden filter today. Isn't it lovely that they don't mention a filter that needs monthly cleaning or it's location in the manuals?!

Clothes Smell Musty and Damp

It sounds like a build up of washing residue. Clean inside the door seal and do a very hot wash with a bit of washing powder and no clothes. Repeat this once a week until smell has gone.
