Can't seem to transfer footage from my SONY HDR SR10 to my imac

I'm trying to transfer some video footage from my Sony HDR SR10 to my imac. When I plug it into the computer, it's not recognized (nothing happens). I thought it would be as simple as iphoto is to recognize a digital camera but I guess I must be missing a step. And the manual isn't helping. Can anyone help me with this?

I don't know if you would call this a solution but I do know that some computers or programs will not except certain cameras. For instance I have a Sony computer and the editing program I have is Adobe Premier which will not except footage from my JVC camera but will except the footage through my Canon camera. I think the Eggheads that design these programs just like to screw with people.
