thanks for your help, what i did was restore to the point that a wireless device manager was installed. I guess it turned out that the drivers for the wireless device were corrupted and the device manager was hanging it up.

You'll probably need to perform an operating system "repair" install. Boot from the Dell-supplied Windows XP disk, select "Install" and at the Install screen, type "R" for repair. It should then restore all the critical software and registry entries, and install default drivers from Dell for your system. You'll then need to perform Microsoft/Windows update, and (perhaps) update drivers to later versions.

Screen goes blank after afew second on ac inly

Try booting to the Safe Mode (F8 at boot) see if you get any further. Also, does the system complete boot (DO you hear windows sounds?) or is the system just hanging after the Splash screen (You can also try an external monitor and press Fn+F8 to enable the external display) If you can get video externally, then is it likely a LCD or video card failure. If you can't boot to the safe mode and you do not hear the Windows Welcome sound that normally plays at the desktop, then the system is not booting and you have either a hard drive failure and/or an operating system failure.
See if you can boot to the BIOS (F2 at boot), then reload the default settings and reboot.

If you suspect the OS is a problem, boot to the XP CD, then run CHKDSK /R and see if that helps
You can also run system Diagnostics by pressing Fn+the Power button

Dell 6400 will not start

have you tried going to safe mode? or safe mode with networking? you can also try to run chkdsk /r on the recovery console,to do this, insert your xp cd,restart, press f12 to go to the boot menu, choose cd/dvd rom, press any key to boot to cd,after loading, press R for repair to go to recovery console, choose number 1 for the windows installation folder, leave password blank, type chkdsk /r press enter, this will take a while, after that type fixboot, press enter, continue, press Y,you might also try to run diagnostics first by pressing FN and Power button at the same time while its off,if it cant find the diagnostic partitition, you can boot to your resource cd or drivers and utilities cd

Wont boot

for no boot issues, you can try accessing windows advanced boot options by hitting F8 as soon as you see the dell splash screen. try to boot to safe mode or last known good configuration. if it doesn't work, last resort is to reformat the computer.

i hope this info helps.

Booting problem

Try putting the computer into safe mode by holding down on the F8 button and selecting safe mode during the boot process. Once you get to the safe mode screen and windows appears, restart the computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem you will have to restore Windows.

Dell Latitude c640 Disable BIOS memory

Just use recovery console of windows xp bootable media and use the following command.

chkdsk (to check the volume).
fixmbr
fixboot

It happens due to improper shutdown methods which has caused the system volume to corrupt the MBR.
