On one of my user's Lenovo X230 the track pad freezes completely when he plugs in the LAN cable in to the Ethernet port on the laptop and works normally when he unplugs the cable from the Ethernet port. I dont think it is a problem with the hardware, so please advise. Thanks in advance

and the correct trackpad driver.
Hi,
I would recommend installing all the newest drivers for the unit.
we recommend telling what os this is.
windows xp to 10? what?
linux
cirix
freedos.
what/?
let me do wild guessing, no history by OP
had w7 upgraded to w10 not asking if the oem supports that w10,oops
and may devices are now dead.
you and millions of other did this.
in most cases I can recover, this
but not if the device dead has no driver earth that supports w10, sorry.
in those cases we by a w10 ethernet usb dongle.
ending this pain.

Sound like you might have a virus - try running antivirus program - such as Avast or Antivir - which is free.
If that doesn't work, then try doing a System Restore - if that doesn't work, then do a System Recovery complete re-install - but back up your pictures and documents first as you will lose everything and you'll be starting over again fresh.

SOURCE: How do I switch my connection from wireless to LAN
It will automatically pull an IP address when you plug in a LAN cable just disable or turn off your wireless. There should be either a switch to turn off your wi-fi or use your function keys to turn it off. Another option would be double click on the two monitors and globe icon in your bottom right hand corner of your screen and choose disconnect.
This sounds like hard drive issues, remove hardware and reseat it back in place, if no change! sub out the ram one at a time testing as you go.If still nothing! the hard drive needs to be a assessed for possible replacement.
