Set the volume level to 'Zero' first, by pressing the volume down button by the front panel of the TV. Then press both volume down button on the front panel of the TV, and display button on the remote control simultaneously. Service mode window should appear. The is the common procedure to get into service mode to Akai TVs. The procedure may differ according to models. If you wish to get more details, check the site linked here. This place is pricey sometimes but has the best coverage of any I have found.
Akai Remotes
There are two different versions offered so a call or email might be worthwhile before buying.

Oh Dear. I had the same problem!! The Akai televisons are not well engineered-meaning that they tried to put too much in a little package. The problem is that the power supply is malfunctioning"supposedly". But I believe that the sad truth is that the whole motherboard is malfunctioning. I can suggest a few TEMPORARY solutions but they too are not guaranteed to work!
1. Bring the tv to a repair shop and tell them to check the power supply. If it is faulty -have it exchanged and it will work for <2 weeks.
2. Literally "bend" the television in multiple directions to find a sweet spot where the screen turns on.( wait for the diode tu tur green before doing this) this will slightly bend the motherboard in hopes of agitating it to turn the screen/bulbs on.
I am terribly sorry that you too have this ridiculous problem!!!!!! :-(
Good Luck!!! I am crossing my fingers for you!!

iF you tried to unplug sets and or boxes connected only a few reasons remain: if remote works when first on or when very close to set the issue may be the infrared receiver==the remote itself can easily be tested but does not sound like the problem although it could be.
If the set is not usable and over a certain age, I would go replace it.
Testimonial: "Thank you for your help,....doubt Akai has that part available after 6 years."
