As a tech, I found FireWire cables to be vastly unreliable, but if you just have to have one, do NOT scrimp. Get one that is heavy duty. The thicker the cable, the better. Avoid flexing the cable near the connectors if at all possible.
The DVR-530 works with SD cards, which max out at 2GB. Your 8GB card is actually an SDHC, not an SD card. While SDHC cards fits into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in this camcorder. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way this camera works.
Plug the SD card with contact terminals facing away from battery. It most likely is using internal memory which is much smaller. All cards under 4gb are normal SD. The camera should be able to format the card, or use an adapter and windows will format (default settings).
The install CD and cable should be included in box w/camera... Vivitar brand was recently bought out by Sakar last year (August 21st, 2008) which means support is likely discontinued. I have the installation CD. One upside of cheap consumer stuff is buying direct online - from China! Check ebay, the cable looks generic enough.
Look for a button that has a lightning bolt symbol on it. I this button is located on the back of the DVR 530. on the on the left side of the back of this camcorder.... once you've found it, press it and something should change on your screen indicating that the flash is on.
