Black Box Hi,  recently there has been a black rectangular box showing up on every channel. My TV is Toshiba, and its pretty old, about 8 years old. However its in perfect shape and has always worked fine. Until now, this black box covers a large portion of the screen. And it goes away when i raise the volume or change the channel but as soon as the number of volume fades from the screen after i change them the black box returns. In other words i would have to keep changing the volume up and down if i dont want the box to return.  Please help me.

You have inadvertently activated one of the closed-caption modes called T1 or Text 1. Find out how to turn the closed-captioning off and on and you'll be able to turn this off.

Black rectangular box shows on screen

This is simple: set in the closed caption menu (some cable boxes also have it) called TEXT. Look in the menu and turn it off first in the set and also in the box used if used for signal.

Odd feature and never really took off--designed so some channels like PBS etc could broadcast text.

A black rectangular black screen shows up but..... sony trinitron

Check the set up. You may have closed captioning turned on which will show up as a black box if there is no closed captioning information for the selected channel. If that fails to resolve the problem, update this.

Thanks,
Dan

Won't display tv and there is a black box during dvd play

It sounds like you have the closed-captioning set to "text" mode. When set this way, if captioning is present the set clears the area where the text goes. You don't see the box on channels or programs where captioning isn't being used. On most TV remotes a single button controls captions, so it's easy to get into text mode without knowing it.

I have a LG plasma T.V., model 42PB4D. Black box/middle of screen

Try this:

In the menu go to CC and set the TV to CC1 as this is a text box appearing for captions. Hope this works!

Big black box on screen

It has something to do with the closed captioning. He must have hit the closed caption button on your remote. You need to either turn the closed caption off or make another selection under closed captioning like cc1 cc2. Just keep making selections until the box goes away.
