If you would be planning to use microsoft office and student 2010 on xp you have to have SP3 of XP. You may refer to system requirements given below.

( By Default the O/s usually is 32 bit operating system. For ex. When you click the drop down list, you will find Windows XP 32 bit and Windows XP 64 bit, Choose the 32 bit )

It sounds like you are running a 32 bit operating system XP, Vista, or Windows 7 (32).
The 32 bit Operating Systems are only able to see and use about 3Gb of RAM. To use a greater amount you will need a 64 bit OS (either Windows XP/64 or Windows 7/64) or one of the open source 64 bit operating systems.

Just make sure you download or purchase Win 7 x 64.

If your doing the upgrade you need to have winxp x 64 installed on your pc first.

the message might be either about your hard disk or mostly about your RAM size. for windows 2007 these are the basic requirements

• 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  
• 512 MB of system memory
  
• 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
  
• Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
  
  if your system does'nt meet the req then upgrade it and then install the operating system
