Question about Kingston Technologies 512MB DataTraveler I (DTI512KR) Hard Drive
I have has this flash drive for about 3 months and have a lot of school information in it. When I try opening it, it says that the disk in drive G is not formatted and would I want to format it? When I click on Yes, it tells me that it cannot be formatted. What Happened?? The flash was working fine.
Luck that it would not format or all of your school information would be wiped clean
That is what formatting means ---clean page , no data , nothing
do it again and press no when the question comes up

SOURCE: hard disk
if you are installing a dos based system thn dos formatting is very good
if you are going to use xp then make boot option in setup as bootable from cd rom
put a win xp setup cd in the cdrom drive
it will boot up saying press any key to continue , and follow the scren instructions
the whole process is that simple a hd can be formatted till bad sectors are not shown up upto 8 %. more thna 8& bad sectors cannot load windows, however dos can still be loaded and so also win me so it doesnot affect the hd
what affects is the jerks and voltage supply variations on the har d disk and some bad virus infections and the temperature the hd has ... always leep hd at a tem p lower than 37 degres c
use a fan to achieve this a 12 volt small fan mounted on the hd .

I think that I have a similar problem (and a potential solution)
1. My thumb drive is 4GB "super talent", and I have used it for about 2years
2. Suddenly, it show up as "REMOVABLE" SKYMEDI USB DEVICE (!)
3. I tried "google" for answer... and did not get further
4. Finally, I righ click on "my computer" -> select "manage" the "computer management" MMC windows open
4.1 I tried the "Disk Management" and it still can not connect to it
4.2 I clicked on "Removable Storage" ... and then I "SKYMEDI..."
4.3. I righ click on the device and select "Task" -> "Free" (thinking ... what can be worst!)
4.4 ... sunddenly ... I see my drive back ... with everything on it....
I hope that this help (... I am guessing that the "removable storage" manager locked this device somehow)

SOURCE: not able to format my pendrive
Make sure you are attaching your pen drive into an USB 2.0 port (also called "high speed USB port"). It must be formatted to FAT32, if it still fails you might try the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. If you are using Windows 98 then you need special driver for your pen drive.
