With my new sony 64 bit notebook computer, my simpletech hard drive shows as write-protected and I can't add new folders.
Usually a protected hard drive has been in a laptop and the hard drive password is setup from the laptop's BIOS configuration. This password is embedded on the hard drive's chip.
This password protects the data from unauthorized access and must be removed before reuse in another laptop or as an external hard drive.
There are no backdoor passwords available and needs to be removed using that laptop's BIOS configuration, you need to know the password to enable you remove the password peotection.

No, I have always used it with a Sony laptop 32 bit Vista and didn't have a problem until now I have a Sony 64 bit Vista. I don't know if it is related, but I have gone into all the folders and I thought the main hard drive file to share programs and it still says I can't copy pictures or make a new file on the external hard drive because the disk is "write-protected".
Is the hard drive 2nd hand?
