Timer record on vcr/dvd attached to digital convtr box
After I hooked up my external antena to my converter box, my converter box to my vcr/dvd, and my vcr to my old analog tv, I set my tv monitor on Ch3 and by using my conveter box remote could bring in all the many digital "substations" (for ex., channels 18, 18.2, 18.3, 18.4, etc). Also when I set both my tv monitor and my vcr/dvd on ch3 I could achieve the same result, and furthermore, I could even "instant record" programs (from ch.18.2, etc) on my vcr. However, I cannot find a way to set my vcr's "timer record" function to record future programs on such digital channels (any channel that has a number followed by a decimal point) because the programing function screen only presents me with channels that are "whole numbers" (ex, 18 - NOT 18.2). Are there any solutions to this problem? If not do newly made vcrs or dvd recording machines present these "alternative channels" (the ones with the decimal points)? Thanks for any help.

You have to set the vcr to channel 3 or 4 (whatever the converter box is set to broadcast on). The signal to record has to come through the converter box. Since the VCR only has a analog tuner, it cannot pick up any digital channels on it's own.

If I understand your request right, You do not have cable or satellite box.
You can not record from your TV. You use the TV as a monitor from the dvd/vcr combo box. What the box receives is what shows on the TV. So you will have to have a digital convertor hooked to the (antenna in) dvd/vcr combo box, (antenna out to the tv antenna in) Depending on the antenna you are using that is on the other end of your cable-in coax connection this will hook to your antenna in on the digital convertor box. If your cable is hooked up and operating correctly and directly to the tv that is digital ready you probabbly have a good picture. When the vhf/uhf signal was transmitted you could go from the dvd/vcr to the tv with no problem. But now that the signal is digital and the tv is set for digital the dvd/vcr will not pass a digital signal to the tv. Best suggestion, you have to get a digital dvd/vcr receiver. The vcr has to be set to channel 3 or 4. The converter box has to set to the channel you want to record the show from and left on during the time that the vcr is recording or you will get no recordings.
You must have a converter box for the tv and for the vcr. Set the vcr to receive chanel 3 and set the converter box to the digital chanel you want to record. Put a splitter on the antenae out and route one to the tv converter box and one to the vcr converter box. GOOD TO GO.
I would need your exact model # to get very specific, but in general:
The "External tuner" will need to come from your TV or a cable/sat box, generally. If your TV has a Video OUT or a Monitor OUT (most television don't), you can hook a yellow AV/RCA video cable from the TV to the Magnavox. You will also need to hook a red/white audio cable from the Audio OUT of your TV to the Magnavox.
Your TV probably doesn't have a Video OUT, so you will need to buy a box. A digital cable box for your cable service would be the best investment. Alternatively, if you can find a digital-to-analog converter box (but these are iffy). Once you have one of these box types, you will need to hook a red, white, and yellow AV/RCA cable from the video/audio OUT of the box to an available video/audio in on your television.
Once your connections are correct, the general rule with tuner-less recorders is: If you can see the channel that you want to record on the television screen, then you will be able to record it.
One final note about Feb 17, 2009: Thanks to Congress, the digital transition date was moved to June 12, 2009 - many areas have already switched, but there is at least a chance that you are in an area that hasn't switched yet.
Let me know the exact model # of your television, and I can tell you if it has a video/monitor out - or, let me know what type of box you decide to buy.
the digital box has to hooked up the rca plugs on the bac of the vcr if you want to use the vcr (you will only be able to pick up channels throught input and the box will have be set on the channel you want to record. You need a switch to hook the vcr and dvd player both up. the atenna cord can be attached to the back of the convertor box then attached to the tv.
if there are rca ports on the front of the vcr which are output, connect those to the tv input 3, the input to input connection is definitely not going to work...
Here is my setup.
1) Separate DVD player
2) Separate VCR
3) Digital to Analog Converter box
4) Analog TV
5) Rabbit ears (UHF/VHF) antenna
The antenna goes into the converter box.
The RF-output of the converter goes into the RF-Input of the VCR
The DVD output goes into the front input jacks of the VCR
The VCR RF-output goes into the TV RF-Input
The VCR Line output goes into the front of the TV
To watch DVDs, we turn on the DVD player, turn on the VCR, and set the VCR channel to L2, and tune the TV to channel 3. The converter is off.
To auto record on the VCR, the converter must be tuned to the station being recorded. The converted must be turned on, the TV can be off.
To watch VCR tapes, turn the TV and VCR on. The TV is set to channel 3. Just press play on the VCR.
To Watch TV. Turn the TV and converter on. The TV is set to channel 3. Change the stations using the converter.
