Ticking Sound of spark igniter persists

I was cleaning the center burner of my two-month old cooktop and the igniter started ticking like I was trying to light it. I moved all five burner controls to low then off but the ticking persists. I also removed and inspected all the burner elements to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi, I have a GE gas top four burner cooking range and for the last 4 weeks it has made this clicking noise from the ignitor every couple of minutes or so. I have had this problems in the past and presents itself in the summertime when the house it cooled by AC or there is more humidity in the air then normal and the windows are open. I don't think anything needs to be replaced because it does not happen in the fall, winter or early spring when the weather cools down or if I have use the burners for a while and then turn them off. The click and spark noise does not come from one burner in particular. This has been a consistent problem in the summer for the last couple or years. What can I do other then unplug my range to keep this clicking noise from ignitor from making me INSANE. HELP!!!!!!!!! Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Excellent it worked thank you. but now the burner in the back of that side, the igniter doesn’t click?... I have to turn on the front first then turn the back on to have the gas get the light of the front. any idea what is wrong?...and would that be the switch or the igniter?
Thanks.

Oops I forgot to mention that both burners front and back use the same one igniter in the middle.

Last night, we had that exact problem with our 5-burner Thermador clicking continuously (until power unplugged).  And this also occured after an over-zealous cleaning.  I tried cleaning carefully around the burners, and ignitors carefully, but nothing would help.
Even after 24 hours, plugging in the power would start the clicking again immediately.  My wife admitted she had maybe used too much water, so we guessed it was a moisture problem below the cooktop surface.  I removed the control knows, and carefully pried up the protective ring below each knob so I could see the controls below.  I cleaned off the obvious crud around the controls, and then put a small ceramic fan heater over two of the holes, and turned it on high.  Hot air blowing back out the other 3 holes.
After about 20-30 minutes of hot air... success!... everything is good now.
Have to give my wife credit for thinking of the heater... I was ready to pull the whole thing out and take it apart.

Thanks for all the tips.  I have a 36-inch GE Monogram drop in gas stove top with electronic igniter,  I pulled the switch knobs and tried the hair-dryer solution.  It didn't work.  Then I removed the removable grate and cap from the small center burner and blew directly down into the center of that burner with the switch caps removed to allow good circulation. It took only a couple of minutes and the ticking stopped.  The cause of the problem was a tea kettle that boiled over. Thanks again.  The tips hear saved me a $99 GE service call and who knows what else. jonolaf

Just fixed my clicking burner issue. I used 2much water while cleaning my cook top. I called GE and the operator told me to dry it out. I removed the burner cap, head assembly, and base and placed a blowdryer where the unit was. After about 10-15 minutes the unit was dried and the clicking ceased and it worked properly.

5Jun2009: My 4 burner GE cooktop # JGP389 has similar ticking problem for the last few weeks. I've been blowing hair dryer, alternate with fan to the switches and the spark module (by the way GE quoted me 182 insane dollars to deliver the module today). It seems to work but not 100%. The ticking stopped on the left burners but the one on the right continues but at a slower frequency (1 tick per minute instead of more frequently before). I continue blowing air through the switch and the spark module. Note: check the spark module if it is sealed. Mine was not. I plan to use silicone to reseal the module. Will postr the result later. My GE Cooktop had similar problems but was easily repaired by removing the knob and running a hair dryer for 5 minutes over the hole. The electronic switches were wet and was causing the ignitor to tick persistently.

It worked, I placed a small fan on top of the knob holes for a few minutes and now everything is fine, no more clicking!
Thank you so much,

The igniter doesn't work at all. If I turn any knob to the ignite setting, you can hear the gas coming out but there is no ticking sound, and therefore no ignition. Can I fix this myself?

Ticking sound on the gas top after burner is off. How do I stop?

Remove all the burners and thoroughly clean in warm to hot soap and water. Do the same for the burner seats on the cooktop.

Ignitors keep making ticking sound, all burners turned off, won't go in lock position, and one burner will not ignite gas despite constant ticking

Probably a spillage or boil over has clogged the burner and some of the liquid has dampened the shank switch mounted on the burner post. Get a shop vac and clean the burner. Wait a day or 2 and see if the switch stops. OR disable the ticky ticky by removing the bottom drawer and looking for the spark module. Remove one of the hot wires and tape it up. Light the burners like granny does with a match. LOL

Stove top ignition doesn't stop ticking

My Dacor cooktop had a similar problem of continuously clicking igniters. I unplugged it a couple months ago and used a piezoelectric igniter to get it started. Then I looked in the Dacor FAQ and it said to clean the ceramic igniter posts with alcohol not water. I had to scrape some gunk off a couple of the posts with a knife before cleaning with alcohol. Now it works.'

I think the igniters use electrical conductivity to detect when they need to spark, so even slight invisible contamination on the igniter insulator can confuse the sensing system. Also they all seem to fire as a group, so all of them need to be clean because if any one of them is dirty then they will all malfunction.

Ticking sound from GE cooktop igniter

Under each gas control is a switch that will turn on the spark module when rotated to the light position. One or more of these switches has failed. Some models these switches are individually replaceable, others the switch is an assembly of all four.

Ticking sound does not go off even after knob is turned to high or medium

A lot of questions on this site but very few answers. I have the same problem. After an overflow from a pot, the 2 front burners now won't light one rear one lights but won't stop sparking and the littlest one is fine.
