Remove battery terminals and clean both posts and terminals
with sandpaper until you see shiny metal. The black coating is lead sulphate which has a high resistance to current flow both into and out of the battery.. Have a load test done on the battery to check for dead cell. Maybe all it needs is a full charge.

I have a 3hp briggs & stratton//the pull rope pulls freely//it does not engage the engine and turn the engine over

You probably need to replace the starter recoil. This is not a very expensive fix. Just be aware that this problem is usually caused by having to pull the starter rope excessively because of some other starting problem. Once you replace the recoil, keep your engine running properly.

Toro Electric Start Problem

Remove spark plug and observe condition. Fouled with oil, bad motor. With plug removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD40 in spark plug hole, pull rope several times see if oil blows out. Spray a lot of starter fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug. Spray starter fluid in air cleaner area of carb, try to start. Replace spark plug, try to start. Ensure oil is full, all mowers have a low oil sensor now. 30w oil. Always use Stabile in gas.

Yamaha 1997 warior will not start with the starter but will start when you pull start it.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, externally charge the battery and have it load tested. This is to eliminate the chance of a weakening battery.

Offhand, check the starter relay. When the start button is pressed, the relay should click and provide contact to the starter motor. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Starter rope will not retract

Either you have a broken rewind spring, or the starter mechanism is dirty to the point where the force of the recoil spring is not sufficient to pull the rope back in.
WEAR SAFETY GLASSES while disassembling your starter mechanism to see what the problem is. Upon reassembly, it is a good idea to lube the post in the starter housing (the one the pulley slides over) with some graphite or teflon lube.

Starter cord will not rewind after being replaced. The string will rewind in the housing before it is attached to the motor but not after being attached. How do you pre wind the springs?

What I do is the following:

Remove the old rope ( what is left of it)

Wind the starter rope pulley about 8 or 9 complete revolutions after I am confident that the spring has engaged the starter pulley

Hold the pulley in place ( align the rope hole in the pulley with hole in the starter housing

Insert the rope and tie a knot, pull the rope back tight against the pulley

Pull the rope all the way out and hold slight tension on the rope and release the tension on the pulley but still holding the starter housing

Starter spring should pull rope into housing... good luck
