Washer agitates, but makes horrible grinding noise. Spins okay.

Washer fills, but when it starts to agitate it makes a terribly loud grinding noise. Removed all the clothes, still made that terrible noise. Switched to spin cycle and it drained and spun just fine.

Solved my own problem! Upon removing the agitator, we found a tiny metal jewelry piece in the groove between the plastic inner tub and the metal inner that the agitator connects to. Hope this helps someone else sometime. Glad I didn't pay GE $80 to come look at it.

The agitator sometimes skips and doesn't turn the base of the agitator. It sounds like it doesn't complete its twist

    Grinding noise during spin cycle

  • Anonymous Mar 13, 2014

Recently my Whirlpool washer would not spin and started making clicking noise when it tried to spin. I replaced the motor coupler and now it spins, But, it still makes that clicking noise during the spin cycle. It drains & agitates fine. It looks as if the agitator is slipping during the spin cycle. Could this be a clutch or brake issue?

  • Anonymous Mar 16, 2014

When you first turn on the washer and it starts pumping it makes a loud grinding noise. Then after the rinse as it starts to drain it makes the same noise but spins fine

My washer will fill up, drain and spin like normal but it will not agitate. The agitator is hard to turn and makes a growling noise.

I have a ge washer. it fills up okay, but will not agitate. the water spins out okay also. and it goes through all steps but clothes were not washed due to not agitating. the model number is WCSR2090D.

If the agitator can be moved freely by hand, you probably have a stripped bell, which is the small plastic dome that the agitator is attached to. Maybe hear a grinding noise in agitation from under the agitator?

It takes a large amount of force to pull the agitator straight off to access the bell, which has one small bolt securing it to the transmission shaft.
Bell is a fairly inexpensive part. Not saying this is your problem, but would check this first, as it is a common repair.
good luck

Loud grinding motor protesting humming w/no spinning or agitating

The drum/agitator bearings are bad I believe, or the gearbox has been damaged. This is an expensive repair. I would strongly consider buying a new washer. This is a great time to buy appliances since the stores are really competing, and the prices are at their lowest.

Terrible noise when agitating

Your transmission has gone out. The reason the spin cycle works is because the transmission spins two different ways and you agitate way stripped the gear. Some places rebuild them. Try with your local stores maybe they can rebuild it or get you a good used one. If not you can order a new one from sears.com

Grinding niose from agitator.

If the fill and drain functions correctly, AND the spin cycle works correctly, AND the cycle itself starts and completes correctly, the problem being that the back and forth motion of the agitator starts the loud grinding noise, it will likley be broken gears in the transmission. The single most expensive part in the washing machine.
