It may be like the one i have which is a maxtor basics 1.5tb drive. There is only one screw behind the sticker. The rest is clips. This is the guide i used when opening the case.

Maxtor basics 500GB external hard drive not working

Every time you turn your computer on it is going to "spin up" and the light is going to come on. Just because the light goes out and it idles so that you can't hear it anymore doesn't mean it isn't still on. It is. You can verify this by using windows explorer to view it and its files.

Unrecognized external HDD

This message usually indicates one of two things:

1 - The driver for the device is not loaded or has become corrupted (I trust that one of the other troubleshooting steps you took included reinstalling the drivers...) or more likely,

2 - The device has malfunctioned. More likely than not, the hard drive itself is OK, only the electronics in the case has failed.

If the device is still under warranty, give Maxtor Customer Service a call and get it replaced. Of course all of the data you have will be gone unless you can convince them to send you ONLY the replacement case and electronics, not the hard drive. In which case you will have to open the old case, remove the hard drive and put it into the new case.

Restore factory settings on maxtor basics external storage 1000gb

What do you mean by factory settings. From the factory, the drive came just formatted with no data on it. If you want that then format the drive in WIndows. My Computer->Select the drive that is Maxtor, right click it and in the box that opens format is one of the options. Select and follow instructions.

I am trying to install a Maxtor Basics 500GB External Desktop Hard Drive and cannot see the drive on my PC. I'm assuming it is not installed. I operate a Windowss XP Platform. Help!

Right click on my computer and go to manage, then go to storage, disk manager and see if the disk shows up there, you may need to partition it first, you can make one partition of that hard drive. If it is not in there, check the jumpers and make sure it is not the same as the main HD. The main drive should be master and the second drive should be slave, or make it cable select and do it in the bios.
