Sounds like hard water is the problem and may have clogged the jets. clean it out really well and get the dishwasher filtration system from www.dishwasherfilter.com. that will remove the hard minerals and leave your dishes and dishwasher spotless. awesome product and the results are guaranteed.

I had the same problem. I switched to a gel dishwashing liquid and added about 1/2 cup of white vinegar to each wash cycle. (Just pour the vinegar in a cup, put it in the dishwasher and let the water fill the cup and disperse the vinegar.) Gradually you can reduce the amount of vinegar that you use. Worked for me, hope it does the same for you.

If you post the model number of your dishwasher plus its approximate age (in years) I can help more.
But the most common cause is a weakening pump motor. On many dishwashers, the wash pump motor is also the drain motor. Replacing that motor / pump assembly will solve the problem. While you are replacing the pump, check the heating element to confirm that it is not shorted out or broken.
For now, add a cap full of bleach to the water _after_ the initial dishwasher fill cycle ends and the wash cycle begins. White vinegar would also work, but this will not fix your problem.
Good Luck!
