Locate the waste ink absorber pads

Put on the gloves. Now remove the waste ink absorber pads and holder from the printer by gently lifting them out

Clean the waste ink absorber by soaking up the ink with a tissue or wipe. Set the waste ink absorber on some newspaper to avoid ink spills.

Wash the sponge with clear water. Allow it to dry completely. This may take at least a day. When it is completely dry, reassemble.

Replace the waste ink absorber pads and sponge. Connect the printer to the power source.

Just to note... I think there's some confusion here between the main waste ink pads in the base of the printer and the parking pad where the printhead rests or gets cleaned.

HeXx13505 deals with the base pads but frankly I doubt you could reach them without knocking the printhead out of gross alignment (thus requiring a service technician to reset everything) so it's a bit moot...

As for the parking pads, you can easily resolve any ink build up here with warm water soaked pads of kitchen absorbent towel which you dab on the parking pads and generally wipe the excess build up away with.

If the pads are overly soiled with dried or gummed up ink, then you need something like a printhead cleaner to return the ink to solution and then absorb it into kitchen towelling again.

Fixya's already been issued but I figured a little redirect was in order for completeness... Cheers

You should NOT clean the absorber pads, as this will void your warranty. If there is no problem with print quality, do not do anything. Call epson for more info.

Epson l210 ink pad ends service life

When the print head is parked there is an absorbent pad inder it. When you do a clean nozzle thats where the ink goes. It has a sensor to warn you when it is getting too full. you can pull it out, wash out the ink, let it dry and put it back.
tip

Manual Counter Reset Method

To manually reset the Ink Jet Counter that compels you to clean your waste pads. For the tip on how to clean your ink waste pads go here.

Please Note: In some cases, your printer may be leaking ink so much and so often that not only does your ink pads need cleaning, but you may need to replace the ink reservoir on your printer or you will have a leaking mess on your hands. This is a decision and judgment only you can make. If your printer is leaking quite of lot of ink, you may have to take it to an authorized Epson Repair Shop or Person. Find an authorized location by starting at Epson.com

The solution below is valid for most of the following printer models listed below this solution, some listed may not work, some not listed may also work it varies as this method is listed below is illegal for an authorized Epson Tech to release.

Thanks to the many user boards on the Internet for this solution that I know has worked for people I've helped here on FixYa.

Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time. The key is in pressing the buttons exactly at the same time. So if this doesn't work the first time, try again and try again. Most people state they get it eventually.

[thanks to fixyourownprinter.com for the crux of this particular solution]

"Printer Onboard Control Panel Key Sequence"

"Press and hold the paper feed, paper switch and the power switch.

Once the power light and paper light flashes twice and the other lights are flashing release the paper feed and paper switch "and then press the paper feed switch".

The power, paper and ink lights will flash twice. At this point the protection counter has been reset."

Don't give up, if it does not reset the first time. The timing is tricky for some people.

Supported Epson Models that I am aware of, others not listed may work and some listed also may not work, it varies but don't be discouraged to try and try again.

You can also try the software download solution listed in this tip I posted.

How can I change the foam pad that absorbes ink? What part is that called?

Hello

Its better to just remove them clean them up and replace it in the printer, because usually some printers require a reset code to re-set the waste ink counter. If the counter is not re-set there will come a time when then printer will refuse to print.

Here is how to clean your waste ink absorber;

Open the printer and locate the waste ink absorber near the ink cartridge.

Remove the absorber pad and hold it in cold water while squeezing the ink out. It would be wise to wear gloves while doing this, because the ink in the pad will leave stains.

Use paper towels to dry the waste ink absorber pad. Let it dry completely before installing it back in the printer.

Reinstall the ink pad into the printer and run a test page to make sure it works.

Hi from Finland. I have epson stylus photo r220 printer. Automatic printheads cleaning does not help. Is manual nozzle clogging with alcohol possible? And is manual ink pad cleaning with isoprophyl alcohol...

For the Ink Pads you can use just water but you have to dissasemble the printer to get them out.
For cleaning the nozzels you can use distilled water with a small syringe put a little in every color into the PRINTHEAD not into the cartridges and let it sit a couple of hours then try again the nozzle check. Good luck

Service required parts inside printer are at end of service life Will i be able to fix myself

Maybe, but other failures may occur soon. This usually is a "waste ink absorber is full" message. If you disassemble the printer, you will find absorbant pads at the sides (one is right under where the ink cartridge rests when not in use). If you remove the pads, blot off the excess ink and then rinse them until the water runs clean. Then let the pads dry (you can use a blow dryer to speed up the final drying step). Then reassemble the printer.

Next you need to reset the counter for the waste ink. Epson provides a utility to do this for some models: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp?cookies=no&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes . You need to enter your printer serial number to get the link.

I hope this helps.

I have an epson stylus photo R200. It has stopped working and has alternate red flashing lights. Error message says serviceable parts are nearing end of life. How do I get it to carry on working?

I'm not sure about the servicable parts. You might want to contact Epson.

I have seen "parts are nearing the end of life" which applies to the ink pads that absorb excess ink. In that case, the printer needs to be replaced or serviced by Epson or an independent service provider. If you just get the ink pads serviced, it may still fail soon. Then you can run the resrt utility. For more information and the reset utility: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp?cookies=no&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes

I hope this helps.

Epson 1280

The ink jet printers have ink absorbing pads to catch and accumulate ink used to clean the printheads. The counter on MB counts number of head cleanings and printer startups (at every start up the heads are cleaned) and at preset number of cleaning alerts the operator that "printer needs maintenance" and sets the red light. You probably need a change ink absorbing pads (or wash them and dry 'em up) and then make a reset the count using printer Service Utility (can be downloaded from the web). To get to the ink absorbing pads is not easy - you need to remove the printer case - I am not familiar with 1280, but I did that on Epson 3000 & 5000 printers. In many cases the pads are actually OK , but the MB reaches the count and flags the pads.
