My KDL-40S20l1 standby led flashe red 4 times pauses and the flashes red 4 times and keeps doing this. There is no sound and no picture. The power button does nothing. I tried the up arrow on the remote while pushing the power button on the set, this did nothing. I tried pushing display > 5 > + > power on the remote with no results. The manual says 4 flashes on the power led is a backlight failure. The power led is not lit at all, only the standby led flashes.
Hi, If all else fails, try do a hard reset. You can verify from your manual, but in some units, this is merely unplugging the unit from mains for a couple of hours. Try again, if it still shows error codes (blinking lights) you probably have to seek the services of a qualified professional. Hope this be of some help/idea. Good luck and kind regards.
Hi again,
4 blinks of the standby led - Most probably video muting caused by (in some models/version/firmware):
1. vertical stop
2. absence of source
3. video board fault
Pls note:
a. Most probably & in some models/version/firmware - Sony uses same model number but for different regions and/or different versions of the firmware and therefore the blinks may refer to something else;
b. When you press the buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus,(not plus )then Power, this normally should bring up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred.
The blinks indicate error codes but not necessarily the exact board/component at fault. At most that it can tell you is where to start diagnosis.
Most techs (or even Sony Service for that matter) would suggest that you try a hard reset as most cases are resolved this way.
Hope this be of further assistance to you.

Thanks, but that's the owners manual and doesn't really tell me anything.
Thanks, but that link is just the owners manual.
I guess what I need to ask is, what does the sequence of four on the standby led mean? The service manual says the power led is the one that you count the flashes on. The power led does not light at all.
