Blank LCD on A650IS

Purchased June 2008. LCD backlight failed last fall and Canon fixed that under warranty. I could see an image in bright sunlight. Now the screen is totally blank but Canon wants $110 to fix. They say, "UNIT HAS SCRATCHES.DENTS TO BACK OF LCD SCREEN" but I don't think that is relevant to the problem. Should they fix this under warranty? If I lose that battle, can I replace the LCD myself for a reasonable cost? I have replaced a laptop screen and 2 motherboards so I do have some capability.

Thanks for the information. I called Canon and they are denying the warranty because of the "dent" on the back cover. I think that is very lame. They also said if they discover that the dent is not related to the failure they will still charge me for the repair and they refuse to return the parts they replace. I am very unhappy with Canon! But they did offer to reduce the price to just under $90 so I am going to let them do the repair this time. I will look into the self-repair next time for sure.

I'm sorry I forgot to answer your question. Yes, we can still take pictures by using the viewfinder. The zoom works but I cannot see the menus to change any settings. The pictures were looking fine at first. Then we tried to turn the flash off by our memory of the steps and I think we screwed something else up as the pictures are now looking overexposed. Anyway, when we get it back from Canon I can reset any bad changes we have made.

My lg TV of three and half years has a black screen with images flashin Intermittently. The sound is fine

What is the model number? If it is only 3 years old, I suspect you have a LCD TV with LED backlight. You quite possibly have a failed LED backlight.

Many LG TVs of this age are starting to fail due to over-worked LEDs in the backlight which create the white light that illuminates the LCD image.

The symptom is TV turns on and off ok, gets sound on the connected video inputs, but has an otherwise black screen with no video on display. You can try to operate the TV near a bright window with lots of sunlight and see if you can perceive a faint image on the screen. A flashlight is often not bright enough to be helpful.

Most of the time, an LED will fail as a short circuit and still allow power to flow through it to other LEDs that will still light up. If one of these LEDs fails as an "open circuit", or if several LEDs have failed in the same circuit, then the power supply detects a fault and shuts the TV down. If the LED is intermittent, you may have flickering. Think of having one light bulb burn out in a string of Christmas lights and having all the lights go out until the bad bulb is replaced... kind of the same thing.

Your TV circuits boards should be fine. In my opinion your TV requires a backlight repair which requires complete disassembly of the entire TV including disassembly of the panel which is a difficult process.

On my Dell E193fpc monitor, the background lighting goes off after a few seconds. The actual Screen-image is still there (can be seen in bright sunlight). How can I get the backlighting to work proper

This sounds as though there might be a problem with the inverter (this is a component that supplies a high voltage for a tube(s) that illuminate the screen.

As there are high voltages on inverters, this is really a job for a repair shop.

My screen stopped showing the pictures completely. During playback and when I'm taking pictures. Could it be that the LCD burnt out and can that be fixed?

I'm assuming that the camera still takes and records images as usual and that you can upload them to view successfully from the memory card, and that the camera powers up and the battery charges as usual.

If so, then the most common causes are a failed LCD panel or loose connectors to the panel from the main circuit board, or a failed backlight. Depending on the age of your model, a new LCD panel should be available and the price depends upon the size. A failed backlight or a loose connector is more common though. In some instances, the LCD driver on the main board has failed, and unless under manufacturer's warranty that usually is terminal for the camera.

It's also not uncommon for users to have simply turned off the LCD display. Not all Canon models allow you to do so, but I suggest that you check your owner's manual to eliminate this really simple cause.

Unfortunately I cannot give more specific advice as you haven't stated the exact model of Canon camera which you 're asking about.

We were playing playstation last night on our tv, then afterwards we watched a movie until about 1:30 a.m. Turned it off and went to bed. When we turned it on this morning there is sound but the screen is...

That sounds like your back light has gone out. Either the back light or it's power supply failed. If you turn it on and get close a bit to the side you should see a ghost image. That will confirm it is a back light instead of a video section problem. A lcd type display creates the images on the lcd panel, but it doesn't generate any light. The backlight shines through and illuminates the images. Very much like a slide or move projector.

The repair cost really varies from model to model. The actual backlight can be repaired for under $150 in most cases. How ever if the power section is part of the main tv board then the entire main board needs to be replaced. That board on other sim sized tv's can run over $450. This is covered under warranty so the first thing you need to do is check if you have any warranty either extended store or the oem warranty. Then contact the store you purchased or go through the Phillips support to find your local repair depot and get ti sent in. If you do not have warranty then you have to be careful as you are paying for this. You need to get a estimate. A repair depot will have a very good idea of the repair cost. You should also have an idea of what a replacement tv is worth. Once you know how much the repair cost is you can then judge if it is worth fixing or if you should get a new tv. A new tv has a new warranty while your repaired tv will not. So if the repair gets too high you are better off replacing and not having any worries.

My screen is very dark ive already adjusted brightness to 100 and i can barely see the image with sunlight cause when i close the curtains i can see nothing

Problemas de luminosidade em TVS LCD, geralmente estao situados no circuito inversor (inverter) ou com as lampadas FLC, que iluminam o display (backlight). Melhor consultar um servi?o tecnico se nao possuir conhecimentos no campo da eletronica.

I swiched off my laptop inspiron 1000 at the off switch. when I put it back on the back light did not work

how do you know it is the backlight? Usually people think that's it but it is the inverter.
f the backlight of your laptop stopped working and the image on the screen is so dim that you can barely see it under bright light, most likely you have a failed inverter board. There is a good chance to fix the problem if you replace the inverter board. If you replace the inverter board but the image is still dim, most likely there is a problem with the backlight lamp inside the LCD screen. If that's the case, try to replace the LCD screen. Note: it's much easier to disassemble the laptop display panel when the display panel is separated from the laptop.

I can definitely fix either way if you are out of warranty from dell.

I was given a Panasonic Lumix Lc20 camera. The little green light comes on and beeps but has no display. What would cause this?

Most likely, a bad system board. There are a few different power supplies on camera boards. If the 8 volt power supply fails, no more backlight. If it really is a backlight problem, you can hold the camera in bright sunlight and see the LCD still showing an image. Not going to be something you can fix, unless you are a tech with parts.

Stay in a bright place or room and then try to press the Disp button once twice or even thrice. By doing so u shd be able to notice the picture or the LCD's backlight turning on.

Lcd black, but can hear the picture being taken

This is part of a known problem with the SONY image sensors that operate the lcd. There is in fact a recall that will replace the bad componets. You need to contact SONY for repairs. Check out this website to learn more about your problem. http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html
