I have had to retrieve the BIOS password from one of these before. It is not an easy thing to get to. You have to first

  • Build a special 9-pin Serial cable using parts you can find at Radio Shack
  • Dismantle the laptop
  • find the correct BIOS chip,
  • Solder a couple wires to the correct pins of the BIOS chip (without getting solder on the other pins, or damaging something)
  • Hook it up to another computer via serial port
  • Do a dump of the information stored on the BIOS chip
  • Use a hex-reader to decipher the information and display the password within.
Here is a link to a site that shows you in detail how to accomplish this. It does work, and I've successfully used the linked method to unlock a X41 of my own.

Forgot username and password for IBM thinkpad x41

Back up your most important data to an external storage device in case anything goes wrong while changing the BIOS settings. Remove any disc that is currently inserted in the IBM Thinkpad X41's disc drive.
2-Shut off the Thinkpad X41 laptop. Turn the laptop back on and wait for the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message to appear on the screen.
3-Tap the blue Access IBM button at the top of the keyboard. Click the "Access BIOS" button when the "Rescue and Recovery" menu appears.
4-Click "Yes" and wait for the BIOS to load. Type in the current BIOS password for the IBM X41 and press Enter.5-Navigate over to the IBM's "Security" heading by tapping the right arrow key twice. Scroll down to the "Supervisor Password" listing and press "F5."6-Type the IBM's current BIOS password and hit Enter. Leave the next field blank if you want to completely remove the BIOS password, or instead type in a new password to replace the old one. Press Enter.7-Press "Escape" and then highlight "Restart" and press F5. Navigate to "Save changes and Restart" and press Enter.

I have a ibm thinkpad x41 i can not access it due to a password on it i need help to get rid of it and put it back to defult

If it's a "Power up" password this can be removed by briefly dosconnecting the cmos battery from the system board. If it is the "Supervisor" password either send to Lenovo for replacement system board and hard drive (not covered under warranty) or send to me and I will return unlocked :-) [email protected] Regards Paul

I have an IBM thinkpad x41 and it comes to the Windows xp screen needing a password and I dont know the password can someone help me?

You can use Ophcrack, an open source software. You don't need any access to Windows to be able to recover your lost passwords. Simply visit the site, download the free ISO image, burn it to a CD and boot from the CD. The Ophcrack program starts, locates the Windows user accounts, and proceeds to recover (crack) the passwords - all automatically.

Here is the link to download you ISO file to burn to a cd.
    http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ophcrack/ophcrack-xp-livecd-2.3.1.iso

Or use Another computer by installing the exe file and make a cd for your recovery:

ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC: reinstalled the x41 using xp.. cant get the video...

Here's the link where you can download the driver for XP. Make sure you select the correct family. X41 has two types of unit. Tablet and regular laptop. Make sure also to choose the correct type and model. If you are not aware of this, it is actually at the white sticker at bottom of your laptop.

My lenovo thinkpad x60 tablet pc was locked, and i can't unlock it at all. can you help me to figure out?

Hi, If you are talking about the Boot, HDD, Bios password, then the only one way to recover it is to implement a chip on the systemboard to shorcut the protection or to contact Lenovo for a systemboard replacement. Otherwise you can check out theses 2 tutorials, with few skill you can make it yourself: -http://www.allservice.ro/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47&start=0 -http://marc.info/?l=full-disclosure&m=111234041830357&w=2 Unfortunalty, no other ways other round. Thanks and have a nice day J-
