Canon MP610 out of black ink

Hi,
My Canon MP610 has just run out of the black ink cartridge, but still has the other colours available - i desperately need to print 1 page and can't get a new cartridge right now. Is there anyway I can get the printer to think it has all the cartridges in it, so it will print for me???

thanks, but the error message "The black in has run out, please replace the ink tank" appears when you turn the printer on - so nothing actually to do with printing.

    ahh, so annoying!!!

Canon MP610 it is terrible. when the black and white cartridge is finished you can't do anything, not print in colour, not scan, nothing, this is an incredible down side to this printer. Unless, does anyone have a solution??

  • jwdenbesten May 11, 2010

it says U163 and tells to replace the ink and is not doing anything at all, and it started when the ink cartridge was finished. i can't even scan, and that is exactly what I have to do now....

Cannon Pixma MP610 - when the black ink is empty and you receive the replace ink message, then hold down the "cancel" button for 5 seconds or so and it the printer automatically bypasses the problem. It does work but Ive had mixed success in terms of the print quality when doing this.

You can trick it to get past this. I will come back to post this as soon as I find the instructions again! The error message is annoying on this printer because it really does stop all its functions when this occurs, you can not scan you can not get it to use the other black cartridge(it has two). It is the most ridiculous thing ever. But there is a way, it involves some crazy holding things down and unplugging replugging etc but it only lasts for one job then you have to do all the steps all over again! Arg. Like I said I will try to get the instructions back here as soon as I find them again cause I need them right now!

The instructions below I found on another forum sometime ago but I no longer know who posted or where I found them, however, they work!!

re: How do I reset the ink level?

I have a Canon MP610 printer to which I fitted a Calidad cartridge.

    To remove the error message:

    1. Disconnect power cord.

    2. Press and hold the power button whilst plugging the cord back in.

    3. Whilst still holding the power button, press the reset button twice. After hitting reset twice release the power button and the printer's display will then read "Factory 1".

Allow the printer to finish warming (takes around 25 seconds).

The word "idle" appears after this time.

    4. Disconnect the power cord.

    5. Reconnect the power cord.

    6. Turn the printer back on.
Now you are good to scan or even print if your second black cartridge has ink! Worked for me!

Experiments with Canon MP610 (full large black reservoir, dwindling small black reservoir, empty colour reservoirs).

I tried solution #2, and although it did remove the error message (which is wonderful) it did not allow any printing.

Solution #3 (the 6-step procedure that requires 3 hands and nerves of steel) got it all the way to being able to start copying (b&w), but the error message appeared again (U163 - empty cartridges). Then I did #2 (hold RESET for 5 seconds), and voila! It copies!

Please note that Solution #3 is not a permanent fix. if you power down, you'll need to do it all over again next time.

Well if your getting an error message then i dont think you can. But you should be able to print in color so if it's a word document maybe changing the color from black to blue might help.

My black and white photos will only print out in sepia. I have plenty of ink in the Cartridges of my MP610. Please help?

Two possibilities come to mind:
  1. There is a function in many printers that lets you print in the single colour of your choice. Check every tab and every "advanced..." dialog box you get when you are about to print. Then go to the printer's properties in the control panel and check whether there's anything like that
  2. Many printers let you print black with black ink, OR alternatively make black by mixing the other three colours CMY. Look for that setting in the same places and deactivate it

yes because u installed both cartridges. if you only installed the color it will still print black by mixing the three colors (known as composite black) try to change the black first or remove it and use the composite black to print black text.

Canon MP610 Printer

You cannot switch to the larger black cartridge. You are using a CMYK (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, Black) format for printing color images.

The larger cartridge is used for text only. The smaller black cartridge is used for color or graphic images.

If the black cartridge was not present, every time you needed black in an image, it would have to come from the composition of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. This would greatly reduce the life of the color cartridges.

Printhead is blocked but it's only the Black PGBK cartridge on my Canon MP610 printer. All other colours are working fine. I can't print a letter unless I select a photo paper.

try removing the black cartridge and with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol clean the cartridge where the ink is. Re-insert and clean the heads.

Why two black ink cartridges?

The larger of the two cartridges is used for text only. The smaller is used for color printing. Its purpose is to eliminate the need for a "Processed" black (black being mader by the color inks).\
