As a precaution, you should check with the manufacturer for the required gas volume and pressure requirements needed to properly supply the unit, and that will help to determine the pipe size and configuration.

In mast cases you'll find that If you are installing the tankless unit at or very near the location of the existing W/H then there should be no reason to change the pipe diameter from the 1/2" feed that is already in use to the existing W/H.

My view is, the current configuration that supplies a 50 gal. W/H should deliver ample volume and pressure to the new tankless unit.

If the tankless unit is to be installed at a different location then the existing W/H then the general rule of thumb is,
3/4-inch black iron pipe can be run up to about 20 feet of length from the gas meter or regulator, and 1-inch black iron pipe can be run for distances up to 70 feet. If other gas appliances are also in the home (gas range, gas clothes dryer and furnace, for examples), larger diameter gas piping may be required to run all appliances at the same time. Keep in mind that in new construction this is easy to plan, but in a remodel, adding larger gas line piping can add to costs of time and materials. Additionally, elevations more than 4,000 feet above sea level may require adjustments for the unit to run properly.

Note: Check with your local plumbing code for your areas requirements.

Good luck

My family is moving in...how do i increase hot water availability?

large water heater, turn p the themo stat to a higher setting ( watch for burns with young childern and older folks)

or the best install a tempering valve. this valve mixs hot water with cold water before it goes into the building.

Again if you have young ones or old people they can burn faster than any other group.the best is a larger heater for the DIY person.

Thanks Tom

Help! We bought out home 3 years ago and have a Nortiz tankless water heater. Recently we heard a dripping sound coming from the water heater and found that the bottom of the unit is leaking. We had a...

you will need to explain more of where the leak is on the bottom. You have two plastic valves on the bottom and if the clips are not on exactly it will leak and if the person who replaced valves did not use vasoline when they put it back together the could have cut the gasket ring on the inside putting in back together and again it will leak. You have to determine where the leak is coming from to begin with using a flash light to get the exact location. .

If my 50 gallon water heater is leaking can i replace it with a smaller water heater?

There should be no problem replacing a 50 gallon heater with a smaller size heater as long as the codes for your city/town allow it. You may also need to pull a permit for the installation, check with your municipality. Some codes state that a home with X square feet or whatever measurement they want to go by, will need at least a 50 gallon hot water heater. Obviously all installation instructions and codes apply to any new hot water heater installation.

Hi..my name is Keith...you can try to blow air into the drain valve to unclog the debris and see if it will drain..but if it has that much debris i think i would replace the hot water heater..also it has a sacrificial rod inside of it..and if it is melted away then the water will eat at your heaters liner and will eventually eat a hole in it...i hope this has helped

Takes a long time to heat water. Brand new Ge 50 gallon water heater. Once heated it right temp, just a long time to heat it and then won't maintain hot water. Is gas line to small? 3/8 copper line. Thanks

If you are using a 3/8" copper line for your gas, get it replaced ASAP. It will fail. 1/2" Black Iron is required with natural gas. 50 gallons is a lot of water to heat. Look on the heater label for the recovery rate.
