Have Direct TV using a Sony Digital Satellite receiver model #SAT B2-2 /Sony Satellite dish purchased in 7/97. I get local channels thru Direct TV. Recently, local channels will show on the Direct TV guide but will not show the names of the programs, just says ''local channels''. If I try to select a local program, everything locks up...I cannot move from the guide, channel surf...nothing..then get an error message saying to ck satellite connection. Direct TV guide for satellite programming works just fine...can channel surf, select programs from guide, etc. Also, when viewing a local channels on the satellite side, programs will frequently cut out...everything goes blank on screen and no sound...will eventually come back on. Non local programs do not have this problem. Direct TV service via phone has no suggestions other than to have us unplug unit and plug back in...they want to send a new satellite receiver to see if that corrects the problem...if it doesn;t they will send someone on a service call to ck the problem. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?? Seems to me if it is the receiver, it should be acting that way on both the local channels as well as the satellite channels.' Thanks, Laura

Your dish is out of alignment. The local channel satellite doesn't have as strong of a signal, so a slight misalignment will cause problems.

It could also be an F-connector needs to be replaced at the dish or multiswitch (if you have one). Sometimes moisture builds up inside the connector and corrodes the copper stinger inside.

If you go into your satellite signal strength menu and find the local channel satellite, you're sure to see either a weak signal or an intermittent one.

One more thing, if a tree has grown in the line of sight between the dish and the satellite, this will cause signal problems too. In this case, you either have to trim the tree or move the dish.

Hope this helps!

P.S.
The customer service reps at DirecTV usually idiots reading from a script with no real field experience.

We lost local tv from Dish on one of the local channels. We want to use the TV (model LC-46D85U) to view the local channel. How do we get the TV to view in local over the air instead of the satellite. ...

Connect air antenna to RF(coax) input of tv. Go to the menu and look for channel setup.Select antenna and auto scan. When done scanning you should have whatever stations you are able to pickup. Connect Sat reciever to one of the other input on the tv. Then go to INPUT or SOURCE on remote and select tv for local and what ever input you sat box is connected to for dish.

Dish network changed to snow when I tried to change station to channel 13. I pressed "power" for 5 seconds with no change.

Hi, Mary with Dish Network Customer Service here. It sounds like when you try to change channels with your remote, it is changing the channels on your TV and not your Satellite Receiver. In the top left corner of the Dish Network remote is an SAT button. When you try to change channels on the Satellite receiver this button should be lighting up. If the TV button lights up, it means the remote is working the TV. Press and release the "SAT" button after you have the picture back on the TV and it should work normally. I hope this resolves your remote issue!

How do i get local chanles on direct tv anywhere i go?

You will ONLY receive the same channels you receive at home with the poretable receiver. This assumes you are in a market where DirrecTV and Dish are required to provide the local channels. Not all TV markets require this.
If you want "local" channels in a different market, buy a seperate RF antenna. Suggest one with a built in amp that clamps on some sort of pole. This all presumes you have a TV that has a digital tuner or a converter.

After programming my NEW Harmony One Logitech remote I can't get it to change channels on the Dish HDTV DVR along with a bunch of other problems.

To control a Dish Network PVR/Satellite, it needs to be set to respond to the default Remote Address (1).

To reset your Dish Network PVR/Satellite to the default Remote Address:

1. Press SYSTEM INFO on the receiver's front panel. The System Information screen displays on the nearby TV and shows the Remote Address.
2. Using the original Dish Network remote, press and hold SAT on your remote control for about three seconds, until all of the mode buttons light up, and then release SAT.
3. Using the NUMBER PAD, press the 1 button
4. Press POUND (#). If you entered the address correctly, SAT will flash three times.
5. Press RECORD. Make sure the Remote Address you see on the System Information screen is 1.
6. Press the SELECT button on the front panel to close the System Information screen.
7. Your Harmony remote should now control your Dish Network PVR/Satellite box

NOTE: Dish Network PVR/Satellite receivers sometimes have two tuners, allowing them to be used in more than one room on different TVs. Harmony remotes can only control a Dish Network receiver's main tuner while still in the same room with direct line of sight to the device.

What other issues are you having with the remote?

Trying to find out what my tvs settings should be on to hook up m

Have you tried channel 3 or the video input channels.
The Tv only needs the one channel that the signal from the box is sent on.
All the viewing channels will be changed through the satellite box.

We have a dish sat. and it says to press select to watch tv. we see no select button to do so. We have just purchased Sharp tv, model # lc-c3242U, please help

Hi,

Depending on how the satellite receiver is wired to the Sharp TV. I suppose your best try would be to select the input source on the Sharp, something like AV1 or Video (1) not channels. Channel selection would be done on the remote of the satellite receiver.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Off Air?

The Scientific Atlanta box was a cable box and recieved CATV signals. The Direct TV box is satellite only. You might check if it has a built in ATSC tuner for off air digital signals. Direct TV in most locations offers the major networks in HD format.
