There are many root causes can make the VPN connection not stable. You should try to rule out the possibility that the outdated firmware cause the issue first. Contact zyxel tech support after you update the firmware.
That model of modem was made with firmware specifically for Sprint so ZyXEL would not have any more recent firmware for the unit. That model has been discontinued for some years now and judging from the type of behavior it is showing the unit may be experiencing a hardware failure.
Your best option would be to try and find an inexpensive ADSL2+ modem to replace it with.
If it's any consolation. My BB 8820 connects to my Zyxel NBG-460N, but after a few minutes the connection just dies (the BB still shows its connected to the WiFi, tries to use it and can in fact send packets out, but it does not receive anything any more). The router has gone through 3 firmware upgrades so far and no solution. It's also causing trouble with some USB WiFi sticks when the SSID hiding is enabled.
In short: I believe ZyXEL's WLAN support is simply broken, and you'll have to buy a WLAN AP from another manufacturer.
