Onan generator fuel pump

Replaced fuel pump. Now generator will run no more than at idle - starving for fuel. 3kw onan genset

Did you change the pump with the correct Onan pump, these are special low pressure pumps, and automotive pump will not work and can cause dangerous flooding and carb issues.

well they have an expensive card in there that controls rpm and voltage to maintain 120v. there is a safety for oil temp in some of those maybe bad try bypassing it after it heats up to pin point it. maybe time to clean brushes?

check for a faulty sump oil switch . check for faulty coil ( magneto on the flywheel) as the time it runs suggests that it is breaking down internally.

Could be or the fuel pump gummed up. Pull off fuel line to carb, unplug fuel pump and conenct direct to battery, see if fuel comes out the line (catch in a container) make sure when you conenct to battery no sparks near the open fuel line. If no fuel replace pump, if fuel pull car apart

When you say no fuel, are you indication the fuel pump has no fuel from the vehicle? if so the pickup tube in the tank should be looked at. If you have fuel at the pump inlet, and the pump makes a load clatter whilst priming check by installing a cheap clear gas fuel filter between the pump out and the carb, run the gen to see if the carb is been starved of fuel, if so replace the fuel pump. Anothe rpoint make sure it is an OEM pump as they are low pressure and an automotive fuel pump is too much pressure and can lock the carb and cause dangerous leaks

Genset runs about ten minutes and shuts down. when you start it runs fine for ten minutes. cleaned carb checked fuel pump, drained tank put new gas. runs ten minutes and quits

Do you have an air filter on that thing? Sounds like it's straving for air.

Yes it wil not let you run your motorhome out of fuel they set it up that way so you dont strand yourself you may have a air bubble in the fuel line to the generator try blowing air generator fule line back into the tank

I have an onan 2800 gen that will not charge

If the govenor didn't work that means that you placed the linkage on the carberator the wrong way. This will cause the genset to overspeed and possibly stop the genset from creating voltage. If the genset does not create voltage then you won't have a charger. Fix the linkage first by looking to make sure that the throttle plate is closed before starting genset. Once you start the genset check for voltage.

1. Does the generator stay running when you start it the first time?

2. What color is the housing on this generator? Try to get the model number and serial number.

If the genset is shutting down on the first try, then your probably not creating voltage. However, if this is an older unit then the genset may stay running although no voltage is created. Place a volt meter on the genset to check for output voltage.
