Is my 2Gb SD card toast? Is it the fault of the card reader?
So, my toddler decided it would be good fun to use the internal card reader on my laptop as a coin depository. No problems in removal of said coins and was able to move the contents of the SD Card to the laptop, so retrieval of any data on the card is not an issue.
I was able to delete the pictures from the disk, first via explorer while the card was in the reader. It gave the appearance of deleting the existing files, but as soon as I used the card in the camera all pictures were back. Attempting to delete the pictures via the camera does the same thing - the camera will at first detect that the card is empty, but then powering off/on the camera finds the pictures are back (this is an canon a560, btw).
All the while, I could still take pictures. Downloaded those successfully off the camera as well. Tried to delete... same thing would happen. Tried to delete via card reader, camera itself, and camera plugged in to USB. None worked so I tried to format from the camera itself - this results in 'Memory Card Error' about halfway through format. I can no longer take pictures.
As soon as I use the card in the reader, vista pops up an offer to run Scan and Fix. I choose yes, selecting both options. Remove card, insert card again, and again Scan and Fix. Have also right-clicked drive and attempted a format - long method results in a very long hang with no activity, short method results in an error.
Last, tried this: >chkdsk g: /f The type of the file system is FAT. Volume Serial Number is 6538-3738 Windows is verifying files and folders... 0 percent completed. >
So if you made it this far, thanks for reading! I'm not worried about the card, if it's done then it's done though I'd appreciate any tools/utilities/suggestions that I could try out. I'm more worried about the reader itself, and if it's going to eat the next card too, Incidentally, drivers are up to date on the reader.
Thanks for the confirmation, unfortunately the laptop is no longer under warranty but thankfully I have another (working) card and can connect via usb.

Re: Is my 2Gb SD card toast? Is it the fault of the card...
Card might have been friend by the reader, I certainly wouldn't try it again with another card. What happened is that when the coin connected with both sides of the reader chip, it created an electrical loopback and fried the reader. Ever taped a penny to a 9-volt battery and it got really hot and eventually melted/exploded? Same thing just happened to your card reader unfortunately. No amount of fixing it inside Vista will solve this problem, I would get into contact with the computer manufacturer and see if you can send it in for fixing. Don't mention how it broke or they will certainly void your warranty. Please rate, thanks!

its because you have the camera set to store the video in the internal memory not the SD card you have to change the settings so it will save into the SD card instead of the internal memory
If you have no SD slot on your laptop, you will have to buy an external USB SD reader. They typically cost $5-$10, and are readily available online (e.g. http://www.buy.com/prod/micro-sd-sdhc-card-usb-reader-for-1gb-2gb-4gb-8gb/q/sellerid/23962916/loc/101/213271933.html) or in almost any store with a good selection of electronics.
mmc cards are notorious for faults and compatibilty issues ,
for instance some cameras only use sd cards and will not pick up none sd cards . if you have an mmc reader which connects to your comp/laptop you can see if that picks up the card .
some times all is need is a format other time you need to check compatability and that is not physically faulty
wow i didnt know that internal card readers only supported so much gb you learn something everyday, one solution you can try is get a camera or something that you can stick the sd card in and plug in your computer then you can transfer files to it
I think you have a SDHC sd card have a look at the card and see if it says 2gb SDHC if it does then you need a new SD card if it doesnt have SDHC then it will be a fault with your card reader.
When You Insert your SD card into the internal card reader, then the SD card is not recognised by the system and the SD card drive doesn't show there. The problem can be because of driver issue, system issue and device issue. To fix the problem you need to go at device manager if there is a yelllow sign in SD card controller, the problem is most probably caused by a driver issue. Then you need to update the driver. You can also download the driver for your card reader.
Also, check if your SD Card is broken. You can also check it into different devices port.
If it is detected then you can backup of your data.
If the problem not resolved by any means and you require you SD Card data then I will suggest you read - https://www.stellarinfo.co.in/services/removable-media-recovery.php
