Electrical cable size requirement

I am considering installing a Kohler 12RES-L standby generator. There will be a 100 foot run from the planned location of the generator to the transfer switch. What rating and type of electrical cable would you recommend. I expect to bury it in a conduit.

This is an answer to your question only. The safest thing to do is hire an electrician to do it. There may be factors you don't recgonize that a skilled eye would pick up on.

The proper size wire is #4 copper or #3 Aluminum. THHN is the most common and most versatile type in conduit. a #6 ground wire is ok. Stranded pulls a lot easier than solid and do yourself a favor and buy some wire pulling lubricant just in case.
Make sure to obey all manufacturer's instructions. If you use aluminum make sure to place anti-oxidation compound or Nolox on your lugs in the panel. Please write back with anymore questions.

I have kohler 12res 60hz generator can I covert to 50hz ? If yes than how can ?

No you cannot, a 60HZ unit is designed to run (and the controller expects to see 60HZ) RPMS 1800 for a 4 pole rotor and 3600RPM for a 2 pole. Slowing engine speed down to 1500RPM the controlelr would see it as under frequency

What is the relationship between size of cable and current

Wire size is similar to water hose, the smaller the hose, the less water that can pass through it. Wire is same principle, the smaller the wire, the less current able to pass through it.

Running when in standby mode

Are you sure this is not normal?

Read your manual.

Most of the larger generators do a test run once a week or so to make sure everything is working ok in case of a power falure.
