Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop Logo

User running WinXP pro on Dell Optiplex gx260 goes to work and local HD not listed, network drives show, under all program all apps gone. When user tries to reboot gets message "user not authorized to restart computer." Only solution is to power off then back on and all then ok. Has happened 3 times in last 7 days. System left on 24hrs and this usually happens when they arrive to work in the am. No virus or malware listed after scans with both AVG and malwarebytes. Any ideas?

Yes this is on a domain but there are no policies setup. There are 10 workstations and this is the only one having this issue. This started happening after they upgraded their QB to 09 and then installed a multifunction samsung printer/scanner /fax. I am leaning towards the samsung as the culprit. To alleviate the problem I replaced the workstation and made sure the samsung was installed correctly on the server. The dell has taken up too much time already. Thanks for your assistance.

I have to agree with inthecellar, it sounds like a group policy object has been applied to this user's computer. See if the user can log on "locally" to the machine, meaning in the third drop down at the login prompt, choose (this computer). If the user can login locally to the machine then group policy wont be an issue, see if he can restart the computer as a local user....and not a domain user.

One drive should be set as master, (the bootable system drive) and the extra drive as slave. Disc management should be able to initialise it then and format as required.
If you install iobit.com and asc-setup, (it is free ware) run the regisrty utility followed by disc cleaner, that will show you where your space has gone. All useful stuff can be stored on the slave disc.
Hope that helps.

Hard drive problems with Optiplex GX260

You should be able to manually enter the drive perameters into bios. That should let you boot. Or boot it up with a boot disk.

Computer does not see hard drive or cd rom

Use separate cable for both the hard drive.
Make master to the one which is bootable, restart your system and just check bios setting whether both the hard disk are detected or not..also under boot device check first boot drive is hard drive which is master and bootable..

Pc cycles on and off

You may try running a diagnostic on your hard drive to make sure it is in good working condition. Most Dell computers have a built-in diagnostic program, if you press F12 at boot, you should be able to access that.

Installing a sound card into my Optiplex GX260

Hi

OptiPlex GX260 can be Small Form-Factor, Small Desktop or Small Mini-Tower. Compatibility with PCline 5.1 PCI depends on the profile of the PCI Card and the Profile of your OptiPlex.

GX260 Small Form-Factor is compatible with Low-Profile PCI Cards only. GX260 Small Desktop and Small Mini-Tower are compatible with standard PCI Cards. (Small Mini-Tower however uses a PCI Cage).

Check OptiPlex GX260 Systems User's Guide - http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/ug/index.htm
From here you visualize the 3 form factors. Also there is info and steps to install PCI cards.

NB:
1. Generally, upmarket PCI cards are standard height. Some manufactures supply a metal piece to allow it to be used in Low-Profile or Standard Profile.
2. Driver software needs to be installed after the hardware is installed.
