If you are looking for map upgrades there are a couple options.
One is to purchase the update on DVD then load it to the unit.
Two Purchase a Lifetime Subscription to mapping which would allow you to update the GPS every 3 months.
You can also obtain a onetime update VIA download on Garmin.com.

Garmin provides free online map updates (if available) within 90 days after purchase. A purchase is recorded when the Garmin Nuvi detects a certain travel speed or when the Nuvi is registered at MyGarmin.com

To qualify for free Map updates, register the Garmin Nuvi at MyGarmin.com using serial number and owner name.

A map update is a large download - which can take considerable amounts of time. When updating a Garmin map with a PC one needs at least 5Gb of free space at the C drive.

This issue sounds like it could be solved with a Map + Firmware Update. To get you firmware updated is a free process all you have to do is navigate to this link and download Garmins WebUpdater Software. Updating your mapping is a diffrerent story, to obtain mapping for your nuvi there is 2 options 1. is a Onetime update via DVD for 49.99 or 2. is to purchase a Lifetime Mapping Update Subscription for the cost of 89.99. Ix would reccommend a Onetime Update for your unit being an older unit. All your GPS accessories can be obtained at www.gpscity.ca or www.gpscity.com.

If you wrongly attempted to enter your SIM unlock code several times, you will require a PUK code (which is usually provided when you obtained/purchased your SIM card).
The PUK (Provider Unlock Kode) code which is specific to your SIM card, can also be requested from your Mobile service provider Help Desk.

Hi Vicki, unless your nuvi was first activated and acquired satellite lock in the last 60 days (unlikely as yours was discontinued a long while ago) then you cannot get free map updates, sorry.

For models activated within the last 60 days Garmin offer a free update to the latest maps if the maps already on the product when it was purchased are an older version. After that, all updats must be paid for.

You simply won't find free map updates legally. Accurate maps cost a fortune to produce and update so nobody gives them away, even the few illegal downloads tend not to work and if they do work are likely to be out of date anyway.

The way that Garmin price their map updates, it's often better to simply buy a new Garmin with the maps pre-installed, although I appreciate that's not the answer you hoped for. If you do buy Garmin updates then you can either go for a one-off update, or for additional cost can buy a lifetime update, but it's limited to the lifetime of the device which is only designed to last three years anyway so may be poor value if you buy the lifetime update and your machine then dies of wear or old age.

If you have a Garmin unit, go to http://www.Garmin.com, download/install the browser extension, and register your device. If you are within 60 days of your first use of the unit, Garmin will give you free updates to your maps. After that, or if you wish to obtain additional maps, you'll have to pay for the updates.

If your unit comes from another manufacturer, start with their web site to see what kind of map support they provide.

2 years is still pretty recent for some GPS. The maps take care of all major roads before new residential areas. Contact Garmin for more clarification.
