Instead of making compression when the starter is pulled, this hedge trimmer creates a vacuum and is very difficult to pull. The cylinder frees up when the spark plug is removed. Is the problem created by a bad reed valve? thanks
No. Sounds like the crankcase is filled with fuel.
Dis-assembly is not necessary. Remove the muffler and spark plug, turn unit so the spark plug hole faces down and let gravity take it's course. Unless this is an old unit, there is no reed valve. If the problem persists inspect the piston, rings and cylinder by looking into the exhaust port. If vertical scoring is visible a top end rebuild may be necessary.

Same problem - exactly as described by gtaylor108's only my machine is a strimmer.
this is a kawasaki KTH600S 2 cycle hedge trimmer. There is no crankcase drain, so I guess I'll have to disassemble the engine to check for fuel, right? thanks
remove the spark plug and inspect the cylinder walls for scratches and such. try adding a teaspoon of oil(no gas) to the cylinder thru the plug hole, replace the plug and pull a few times. tell me if anything is different, compression and were the oil goes. if you can still see it in the top or if it disappears. this can tell me what exactly the piston is doing. and if the fuel mixture screws are turned too high it can cause this problem also.
what brand is this? is the exhaust screens clean and is the muffler plugged? need a little more info.
