I have a Cannon Powershot A95. It worked great two weeks ago. Out of the blue I went to use it on vacation and the lens will not stay open when I turn the camera on. I turn it on, the lens zooms in and out and then the lens closes again and shortly after the camera turns off. While all this is going on, the camera is making a ticking sort of sound like it is stuck on the inside.
If the lens is buzzing and followed by an "E18" or "lens error" message then the lens will need to be replaced. If no message appears you may just have flat batteries or even a single bad battery can cause this. Try getting some good quality disposable batteries specifically for digital cameras. If all is well with the new ones, invest in a new set of rechargeables.

Hi, The black screen problem means the lens sensor is spoiled due to over exposure to heat. Its better to give it to cannon service centre. If your camera is under warranty period its well and good they will replace the lens sensor for free of cost. Thank you
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
Hi, It is problem of ccd imager and requires replacement of that part in your Canon A95 to see clear view. Canon will replace that part free of cost as per announced scheme. Click Canon CCD Advisory for details. Good luck.
There are quite a few of us with symilar problem, but the screen is not completely black: it has some purple or pinkish color when facing light. Old pics and menu can still be viewed. I noticed 4 symilar threads on Canon A95 within the last 5 mins without any search, just looking at the top questions.
