I have a Yard Machines 28cc 15" Y28 trimmer. Every thing was fine until it stopped advancing string. So I tapped it on the ground and I got no advancement. Removed the reel and the string pulled off...

Clean everything very well, make sure spring is not hung in compressed position, you should be able to push button or head down and then pull on string and it should come out. Push again and it should pull out again, if not you will have to find reason why. The last time you changed string are you sure you wound it correctly?

Automatic line advance not advancing on Ryobi 18v trimmer

I have a Ryobi Model RY28040 straight shaft line trimmer. In my case I replaced the complete String Head Assembly that includes the String Head Housing, Spring, and Spool and the string still did not advance. I then discovered that the bolt in the Spool Retainer cap (the red cap that attaches the spool to the shaft) was fused and not moving. The bolt needs to be loose inside the cap in order to allow the spool to move in and out by the spring. I loosened the bolt and fastened the spool back onto the shaft. Fired it up and bumped it a few times and the line began to advance. Turns out I probably only needed to replace the Spool Retainer rather than the String Head Assembly.

How do you advance the string

These little electric machines have an automatic line feeding system. Do not bump the trimmer head on the ground attempting to make line advance. If the line advance is not functioning like it should, then the string head should be removed and the spool inspected for snags and tangles.

String problem

Donna, take the spool that holds the string off. Look to see which wat the string is supposed to be wound onto the spool. If the string in on correctly, check to see if one or more of the turns of the string is overlaying itself. If there is overlap, clear it out by unwinding enough to unlap it. If the string is going the wrong way when you check it, remove and save the string from the spool, rewind it in the correct direction, put it back onto the machine and see if that corrects the problem. Woman or not, you are smart enough to ask, you are smart enough...Good luck...Lee

String on weed wacker does not automatically advance.

the notice on the trimmer says it has an AFS Automatic Feed Spool, "NO BUMPING REQUIRED". I see that underneath the spool, there's a small plastic centrifugal weightwith a peg on it. . It kinda looks like it might advance the line each time the electric motor starts and stops. If there are loose clippings in there, or if the weight is stuck, it probably would cause the problem.

B & D auto feed string trimmer won't advance string

Is the string spool seated on the rachet correctly? If so and all is well, it is worth noting that these trimmers auto feed fuunction is problematic at best, requiring manually unwinding some line every few minutes as the unit gets older.

String will not advance on black and decker grass hog electric trimmer

Did you re-string it? If you did it is possible that you crossed the string over itself and it is stuck. Check that and good luck...Lee
