Sound comes through only one speaker at a time.

Is the sound on both channels on a pair of headphones? If it is suspect a faulty headphone socket, especially if the speakers are cut out when the headphone jack is inserted - normally.

Mp3 sound doesnt sound right

The right speaker is open, a digital meter set to ohms will confirm, good/bad should measure 4.0 ohms to 8.0 ohms, if no reading it is bad.

What does check phase mean? Must have something to do with the sound since I am not getting any from any source except am/fm but only out of one front speaker.

Hello
There is tow leads for every speaker. Out of which, one will be marked [+ve] and the other will be negative. The negative terminal of the speaker should coincide with the negative terminal of the respective output terminal from the amp. For the other speaker also, this must be the same with respect to connection. If any one connection in one speaker has been reversed, the sound effect will be effecteed. When we connect in phase, that is [+ve] and [-ve] correctly to both speakers the sound effect will be great. If one among them is reversed, the effect of one speaker will neutralise the other, and the sound spectrum also will be neutralised. Checking this connection whether it has give in correct way is calle "check phase'. OK.

Hey, I've got an HP Compaq D530 SFF desktop machine whose sound card uses the SoundMAX drivers. The problem is that when I connect earphones/headphones on the front panel, and try to listen to music or...

if you go to the bios (restart computer and press del to go to setup) you should be able to look around and find the option for internal speaker. Set that option to disable and do not change anything else unless you know your way around. Save it and restart afterwards and it should disable the internal speakers.

you will probably have to update the drivers to your sound card. So look for the company that made your sound card go to their site and they should allow you to update it. But if that doesnt work it might just be because of your speakers
