My laptop, an Acer Aspire V5, has an internal or built in microphone for recording and such so when I use my headphone, I only connect it to the audio since it has only an audio jack. It worked well not until suddenly, Skype hanged for a bit, then malfunctioned and dropped our call. When I called back, my mother can no longer hear me when the headphone is plugged in but as soon as I remove it, she can hear me again. I was wondering why that happened when I can use my headphone and built in Mic before for calls in Skype and even for recording sounds.

Reinstalling your software for soundcard may help solve your problem. :)
SOURCE: Acer aspire 4720z Built-in microphone only records loud static
Based on sybabe solution,That leaves me with :
1-The built in Mic element has gone bad or
2- The contacts in 3.5 mm internal jack port are not fully closed when an external mic is not present.
Hope thats helps...

Sounds like a problem with the mainboard. Both of those jacks are attached directly to the mainboard. Anyhow, try doing a windows system restore to a day or two before the problem started. This will help to eliminate any software/config issues. If still no good, your best option is likely a PCMCIA (slot card) sound card. This will allow you to connect speakers and a microphone for probably less than 50 dollars. Let me know what happens.
