Microphone stopped working

My laptop, an Acer Aspire V5, has an internal or built in microphone for recording and such so when I use my headphone, I only connect it to the audio since it has only an audio jack. It worked well not until suddenly, Skype hanged for a bit, then malfunctioned and dropped our call. When I called back, my mother can no longer hear me when the headphone is plugged in but as soon as I remove it, she can hear me again. I was wondering why that happened when I can use my headphone and built in Mic before for calls in Skype and even for recording sounds.

SOURCE: Hellppp!

Sounds like a problem with the mainboard. Both of those jacks are attached directly to the mainboard. Anyhow, try doing a windows system restore to a day or two before the problem started. This will help to eliminate any software/config issues. If still no good, your best option is likely a PCMCIA (slot card) sound card. This will allow you to connect speakers and a microphone for probably less than 50 dollars. Let me know what happens.

It has combo headphone/microphone jack. For headphone or microphone you can use the same port. It is located on the right hand side near power plug.

How to turn microphone on

Acer laptops feature on-board microphones for sound recording purposes within Windows.
Since an internal microphone can be a very handy tool for communication and speech-to text capabilities, working without a functional mic can severely hinder work flow for many users.
If you do not have any prior knowledge of how to repair a non-functional microphone within Windows, you may feel the need to send off your Acer laptop for repair.
There is no need, because even the most novice Acer user can do it.

Go to "Start," "Control Panel," then double-click on "Add/remove Programs."
Click on the "Windows Setup" tab, "Multimedia," then select "Details."

Does the acer aspire 5532 have a sound card or built in microphone?

I believe it has both, strictly speaking it won't be a dedicated sound card as such but the capability will be integrated onto the motherboard. According to Acer Support the 5532 has High-definition audio support, Two built-in stereo speakers and is MS-Sound compatible. The peripheral subsystem has a Headphone/speaker/line-out jack and a Microphone-in jack should you want to add an external microphone for better quality recording.
