Water loss in pool, but no hole in liner

I filled up my pool, and over the course of a few days, the water level dropped. There doesn't appear to be a hole in the liner. What could other problems be? Product is Intex 12' x 30" metal frame pool with punp. Thanks for your help.

The only problem is that ther is a leak in the liner. Generally at the bottom where a rock or debris has made a small hole. They can be patched but the pool will need to be drained. Call your local pool service company.

How to fix a hole in a swimming pool liner

  • Get some food coloring...
    • Squeeze bottle works best
    • Or pool leak detection Dye
  • get some good goggles...
  • get in the pool, start at one specific area...
  • and take a deep breath...
  • Now follow all the seams 1st, squeeze some dye in a suspected area and watch. If the dye gets sucked in, there's a leak! If it just puddles and hangs around, keep checking somewhere else.

Bucket Testing to Locate Leaks In Your Swimming Pool

How To Conduct a Swimming Pool Leak Detection Using A Simple Bucket Test
In Arizona, you can see up a 3/4" per day loss through evaporation and it is suspected that during the course of a year, that nearly 3/4 of the pool would have been replaced due to evaporation.

Evaporation will vary greatly depending on a several factors; water temperature, air temperature, wind, dew points, barometric pressures and just overall changes in seasons. Also, if you heat your pool, you will also notice variations in evaporation. Because of these factors, evaporation rates can fluctuate from day to day, pool to pool, and of course, from parts of the country to others.

It is amazing how many people call in with concerns of leaks in their pool. They really are not sure why they are concerned but something has caught their attention and caused concern.

Before becoming too concerned about a leak, or spending the money on an expensive leak detection, conduct simple bucket test to determine if water loss in your swimming pool is due to a leak or is just evaporation.

In a nut shell, a bucket test exposes water in a bucket to the same conditions as those affecting your swimming pool. By comparing the water loss in the bucket to that in the pool, it is possible to determine if the pool is leaking or if supposed leaks are just the result of water being lost to the air.

Before undertaking any test, make sure your automatic water leveler is turned off!
Bucket Test Procedure:

Bring the pool water to its normal level

Fill an empty bucket with pool water to about one inch from the top of bucket. (By filling the bucket close to the top you are ensuring that air movement over the surface of the bucket will similar to that of the pool.)

Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool. To keep it from floating away it may be necessary to place a few bricks or rocks into the bucket. (By placing the bucket in the pool water you are ensuring that the water temperature of each body of water will be similar).

Mark the water level inside the bucket with a permanent marker on the outside of the bucket.

Mark the water level of the pool on the outside of the bucket, on the pool wall, or skimmer face plate. I recommend the bucket, because then you have something tangible to look at.

Operate the pool for 24 hours as it had been operated when a leak was first suspected, in most cases, this will be the normal run times.

After 24 hours, make a second mark on the bucket to indicate the level of the water in the bucket and do the same for the pool level.

Compare the two levels. If the pool water has changed more than the inside water level, there is probably a leak. At this point, you should contact a professional leak detection agency.

You are probably wondering how this works when the body of waters are so vastly different in size. It all comes down to surface area. No matter how large or how small, environmental factors act the same on the surface area of the body you are testing.
Further Diagnosis: Establishing suspected leak locations with a "Pump on/Pump off test"

Comparing the results of the bucket tests with the pump on for 24 hours to the results with the pump off for 24 hours can provide additional information as to the type of leaking you may be experiencing.

Conduct a second bucket test with the equipment sitting idle. Do the same steps as noted above. Any leaks during this time are now called static leaks.

Water loss pump on > water loss pump off = suspect return plumbing leaks (Pressure side plumbing)

RESULT #1: Water Loss Active greater than Water Loss Static

PROBABILITY: Skimmer/main drain or other plumbing leaks (return lines, infloor system, aerator)\

RESULT #2: Water Loss Active equal to Water Loss Static

PROBABILITY: suspect shell, liner or fitting leaks, (non-plumbing)

If you have an in floor cleaning system, water feature or specialty items on your pool you should also conduct independent tests with each of these in the normal operation and compare them against other results when they are not in operation.

These types of tests are not 100%, but they do provide you with enough information to determine if further leak detection is necessary and to provide the leak detection company with some great information!

We hope to have been of service to you!

The Ugly Pool Guy, www.WeFixUglyPools.com
My pool has a leak i cant find

If you have an auto fill turn it off. Do not add water and watch the level of the pool. The water loss will drop when it stops past the leak. Most leaks are in the skimmer throat.

Above ground pool leak

Is this an above ground pool or an in ground pool? As a general rule you don't want vinyl to go too long without water. Water helps things stay in place. If the vinyl starts to shrink and bow inward there is a good chance that it will lose its elasticity and split when the pool is being refilled. I would advise you to go ahead and refill the pool. Leaks can be repaired underwater. In the event of a split I'd go back to the installer and pursue a new liner at his expense.

Im filliing my intex pool and found water trickleing from underneath, how can i find the leak. or should i continue to fill to better locate the leak?

Now let's find that leak! Fill the pool to its normal level and mark it. A piece of duct tape is ideal for this. Next with your filter system running the whole time, wait 12 to 24 hours and measure the loss of water. Then refill the pool back to the same level and with the filter system off, wait the same amount of time (also over the same part of the day, ie. 8 AM to 8 AM or 7 PM to 7 AM) and measure the water loss.
If you are losing more water with the filter system running, the leak is on the pressure side of your plumbing somewhere PAST the impeller of the pump. If you are losing less water with the filter system not running, the leak is on the vacuum side of your plumbing somewhere BEFORE the impeller of the pump. Please note that in this case, most of the time the pool only loses water when the system is off and not when it's on. If the water loss is the same, then your leak is in the structure of the pool and not in the plumbing.
Let's deal with a leak in the plumbing first. We will assume that there is not an obvious leak (one that you can see) on the filter system. Did you check where your backwash line comes out? There are two ways to find this leak. First, you can pressure test the lines, then dig, following the leaking line till you find it. You can also call in your local leak detection service. We would highly recommend the latter, unless you like to dig. Professionals will use "geophones" to listen for the leak and only dig where necessary!
Now lets look at a leak in the structure of a concrete pool. You will need some food coloring for this, and you will want to turn off the pump at least an hour before you do this. In a concrete pool, any cracks in the shell are usually obvious. By squeezing out the food coloring near the crack, you will see the crack pull the food coloring in. That will show you where the pool is leaking. Yes, you may have to get in the pool to do this, but isn't that why you got the pool in the first place? If there are no visible cracks, you will want to squeeze out the food coloring around any of the items that pierce the shell of the pool (main drain, returns, lights, etc.). Be sure to check the "mouth" of the skimmer where the plastic of the skimmer meets the concrete. This area is very susceptible to movement and often separates causing a leak.
Once the leak is found, it is easy to fix using a patching material. Most of them will work under water. After patching, check again with your food coloring to make sure you plugged the leak. Please note that if you patch near a fitting, you will want to leave the pump off while it cures, so the flow of water doesn't wash the patch away.
What if you have a vinyl pool with a leak? A leak can be a little harder to find and fix in a vinyl pool, but it's not impossible. We would recommend that you first check around all the items that pierce the liner (main drain, returns, lights, etc.). If you find that the liner has pulled away or is leaking behind a fitting, we would STRONGLY recommend that you call in your local pool professional at this point. If you mess this repair up you could easily be looking at a new liner!
If you do not detect a leak around the fittings, you will need to search the liner itself. A lot of vinyl liners have a pattern on the walls or bottom which can make it difficult to see a hole. Sometimes by running your hand over the floor and walls you may feel a tear or puncture that's not easily visible. If you have a friend who is a diver, he or she can do the job a lot easier with a tank than you can by holding your breath. Note: only certified divers should be using diving gear, even in a pool. Sometimes there is a depression on the floor which might indicate erosion caused by the flow of water. After finding the leak it is an easy matter to patch, using a vinyl patch kit and following the directions.
i hope this helps...let me know, thanks and good luck

Inground pool liner

need to drain the pool pull up the trim see if you can stretch the liner back into position (works best on hot sunny day doesnt work at all in cold weather). Alot of pools have a u shaped groove the liner goes into then plastic tubing is hammered into the groove (a similar application is screens for windows and the spline that holds the screen in place). I also use a shopvac to "pull a vacuum" on the liner to help pull into sides of pool before filling. If your liner is more than a few years old or was trimmed too short you are probably out of luck

Replacing liner 18x33: forgot to unscrew pump from alum. frame while filling pool. is it safe to cut a **** in the liner to pull the plate through or would it be safer to take the foot rail and coping

I have never had to cut a hole in my pool liners when installing them. What kind of hole are you trying to cut - I am not sure what you mean by pulling the pump cover through? If you will provide further details about what you are trying to do, I can help you better.
