Krups Il primo espresso machine

Hello, A friend just gave me this coffee machine. Supposedly her parents had only used it a couple of times, so it was like new. Every time I try making coffee (the same way I've always done), for some reason it takes way too long compared to every other espresso machine I've owned and all the steam goes out in the top, where you have the actual coffee, so by the time it's finished there's only a few drops of coffee syrup-like. Am I putting too much coffee that it prevents the water from draining through tthe coffeee grounds? Could someone explain to me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it?

It needs a new flow meter. I replaced the one in mine and now it works fine. I took the old one apart and the little magnet inside is a ferrite magnet which rusts over time when it comes in contact with water ( duh). If the new one does this I am going to just replace the little magnet with a rare-earth magnet which will cost about $1 or less and shouldn't rust out. I am wondering if the company changed the magnet in the new flow meter so this doesn't happen or if planned obsellesants, just last long enough to get it out of warranty, is the company's motto. The new flow meter was around $30 when the added the $9 for shipping.

Manual for Krups Il Primo 972

That model is ancient, you are going to be scratching to find a handbook for one of those things. You may be better to ask specific questions relating to what operation of the machine you don't understand. They make good coffee, were relatively reliable and now any parts you may need are now obsolete.

The frother on my krups 'il primo' has lost power. The steam barely comes out. How can I fix that?

I've also had this problem with the Krups 'Il Primo' - reduced steam for frothing of milk but plenty of espresso.
Diagnosis: over many uses, a residue of dried milk plugs the interior of the steamer tip.
Fix: Using a small adjustable wrench, remove the tip. Clean it inside and out with a tooth pick. Reattach the tip - gentle with the wrench.

My parents gave me their old espresso machine, it looks gross when I take the top lid off. How do I ensure it is properly cleaned? It's the Krups allegro fnd 112

You can buy coffee pot descaling products at the grocery or department stores, or you can use a vinegar and water solution to break down the mineral deposits. You can use a cloth to start the cleaning, but scrubbing with abrasives is not a good idea.

If you use a retail product, follow instructions; if you use vinegar, use half water, half vinegar. Run it as though you were making expresso, using the frother while you do it. The frother can also be taken apart and soaked. Afterward, run the machine with clean water until all traces of the vinegar are gone. If it is really dirty, you may have to do it several times. Thanks for using fixya.

Why doesn't my Krups espresso maker produce crema when I brew espresso? Very little is produced and gets blasted away by the time it's don't brewing.

Crema is the goldish brown top that goes onto the top of the coffee once it is dispersed from the espresso tap and flows naturally as part of the coffee when coffee is made. Im not sure what you mean "blasted."
Perhaps you should flush through the machine with cold water a couple of times beforehand and also consider a descaling kit - check your manual or Krups if there is one for this model.
Crema isn't produced by any machine though.

Icky stuff

I would suggest to disassemble the machine and clean individual parts, chunky orange is rust, which is not normal in the coffee machine tubing.
