Freezer works, frig does not. Also ice build up in freezer coil

This is a two year old 10 cu. ft. Avanti top freezer bottom refrigerator. Freezer compartment works, but frig compartment does not get cold. Freezer fan blows cold air into frig compartment only when freezer door is open. Cold air stops flowing down once the freezer door closes, not even worm air blows down. Opened freezer back panel and coils is all frosted with ice build up. I don't se a defrost element in the freezer compartment.
It looks like if I can get the cold air to blow down into frig it should fix the problem. Is there any air ducts that may be clogged up with ice?
Any help in troubleshooting is greatly appreciated.

I just worked on a FF801W which is supposed to be very similar. The defrost heater in mine was of the glass tube type and located under the evaporator. There was a bimetal thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator and a thermal fuse (sealed in a clear plastic tube) nearby. The connections were behind a little plastic cover (2 screws) in the back wall just above the evaporator.

Mine was iced up like yours and I had to defrost it with a hair dryer. All the defrosting parts in the freezer compartment turned out to work so I now suspect the defrost timer (down by the compressor). I've marked it and I'm waiting to see if it's turning.

Ffbm 920w won't cool

It appears that your auto defrosting system (if you have one) is not working. So your evaporator coil is frozen up - all that ice serves as an insulator and not enough cold air is getting down into frig section. Until you replace either the freezer defrost element or the defrost timer all you need to do is unplug for a few hours till it fully defrosts then plug back in - will work fine for a few days at normal internal temps till the ice builds up again.

If your timer and defrost element are both working properly, THEN, you might want to check if you have enough refrigerant in the system - you may have a leak.

Kenmore Refrig Model # 75922400 top Freezer. Freezer is freezing really good but frig is around 46 - 48 degrees at coldest setting. We discovered ice on vents in freezer and thawed them out with hair...

Sounds like a defrost failure.
Look on the back wall of the freezer from the inside.
If it is covered in ice your defrost system has failed.
Also check the fan motor in the freezer.
If it is not running it must be replaced.

Good afternoon........ I have a top mount frig.. we bought it in 1998. The frig works great..... The only problem we have is water seems to built up on the inside bottom of the frig.... I know it is not...

Hi Dan,

It sounds like you have a defrost drain issue. An annoyance to say the least. To repair you will need to clear the defrost drain as it can get a build up over a few years of use. On a top freezer model you will need to unload the freezer and remove the back panel, be sure the power is disconnected by unplugging the refrigerator.

With the back panel off you will see a set of coils that resemble a radiator in a car, below that coil is a pan that slopes to a hole the size of a dime, you may not be able to see that hole due to the ice build up. Clear the ice with hot water and towels to clean up the mess. Careful not to use anything sharp or damage the coil.

Once the ice is gone use a turkey baster to flush hot water down that dime sized hole until it flows clear, you will know when it is.

Reassemble and enjoy a water free frig.

Compressor is making very loud clunk when shutting off.

I think the wire was kinda expensive. If I were you I would try to save the fridge. I think you should unplug it for a couple hours, take everything out for a while and remove any ice. Once the fridge reached room temp, the refrigerant should have made its way back to the compressor. Plug it back in and see if it makes the noise again.
It might just be the fan in the freezer. I would try the unplug/deice for a few hour method first because it is free before you try to replace a fan that might be bumping ice. Good luck!

Freezer is not defrosting

Sounds as if the drain line in back is stopped up in the freezer section. Sometimes the insulation which is foam the excess settles in the drain area must be cleaned out. You will have to remove the inside of the freezer section to get to it. It;s best to take outside and use a water hose to flush it out. A messy job but it works. BB

No air coming into refrig to cool

We pulled the back panel in the freezer and found the coils frozen. We defrosted the coils and the fridge started working. We will be getting a new timer. Thanks
