Husqvarna Prisma 980 decorative stitch cassettes don't work

I've had my Husqvarna Prisma 980 sewing machine for more than 20 years. The decorative stitch cassettes (read-only) used to work, but now the machine won't switch from the default utility stitches to any of the decorative stitch cassettes (B, C, D). Everything appears to be working just fine in the default utility mode. Inserting the decorative stitch cassettes has no effect at all. It seems that either they're dead or the machine has lost the ability to read them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks, Kent! I would never have figured this out on my own. Using your solution, I was able to get all three of the decorative stitch cassettes to work.

There are one or two 3/16" white squares on the lower end of each cassette. They correspond to the decorative stitch set on the opposite side of the cassette.

I didn't have white-out or white paint. First I tried using 3/16" squares cut from the white border of a sheet of self-adhesive postage stamps...this was partially successful. Then I tried larger pieces (5/16" x 5/16")...this was 100% successful.

    Thanks again for your help!

Sewing machine works on default setting but cassette won't change setting and lights on circuit board are not on.

On that machine, the cassettes aren't actually computer chips. Each cassette has a little spot of white on a certain little area you must find (top right I'm pretty sure). Look in the machine at that point. There is a sensor that looks for that white spot, and as it identifies it, it changes stitches according to that cassette. Either the sensor is blocked, gone bad, or you can put a fresh coat of white paint on with white out. I hope this helps.

could be something wrong with a part or a cam. if the machine keeps doing the same problem, it would be a good idea to have it checked.

since the sewing machine was given to you, it might be a good idea to have the sewing machine serviced to see if there is a problem with the reverse and stitch setting.

I have a viking 980. The decorative stitching does not work. I have no manual. Can any one tell me how to use these stitches. I think I may have just forgotten what to do.....:( Thanks! ChampionChicka

If the decorative stitches you are talking about are on the card that you insert into the machine, the problem can be that the sensor is not seeing the white squares on the bottom of the card itself. Take white paint or a white out liquid paper and "paint" the white squares at the bottom of the card but only the white squares. That will help the sensors "see" which card you have inserted. If that doesn't do it, your sensors are bad and they are not available. Make sure the paint is dry before you put the card back into the machine.
