The drain pipe that your drain hose goes into is more than likely the problem. The drain pipes should have a p trap which looks kind of like an S- shape the water stays in the trap preventing the smell from backing into your home . If there is none, install one.

We purchased a kenmore high efficiency washing machine. after the second load, we get a sewer smell in the other part of the house.do you have any suggestions?

There may be a venting problem with the sewer lines. These machines expel water very fast and at higher pressures than other types of machines. This can cause suctioning of water from drain traps if there is improper or clogged venting of the sewer lines. Have the sewer lines checked by someone knowledgeable about proper venting practices.

Odor coming from washing machine - smells like sewer gas

The odor coming from your washing could indicate a problem with your
hot water heater or possibly your city's cold water supply line.
In some cases the odor might be originating from the drain located adjacent to
the washing machine. During long periods of inactivity, if no water is flushed
down the drain, a sewer smell will be emitted from the drain. To alleviate
this condition, just flush water down the drain.
I hope this helps you solve your problem.

When machine pumps out the smell comes through the sink

All plumbing drains whether under a sink or the stand pipe drain, for a washer, are required by LAW to have a trap to prevent the sewer gases from entering a home.

Sewer gases are dangerous in many ways, not the least of which is the terrible smell. Sewer gas can build up and if allowed to accumulate near an appliance that operates on gas (LP or natural) can combust and cause a fire and/or an explosion.

Yes, if you can do the installation youself, do it ASAP, or contact a licensed plumber and have installed a proper drain trap for the sink and also make sure the drain that the washer is draining into, also has a trap in it.

This will have a profound impact on the smell and will help alleviate foul odors from your sewer lines.

Hope you found this Very Helpful and best regards!

Duet washer has a strong odor when draining

you might be getting "sewer gases" from your drain, but most likely your washer is the cause of the odors.
does it also smell musty when you get your clothes out?
whirlpool makes a product called "affresh" that is specially designed to clean out the residues from a front load washer.
you can find them at sears or lowes and the come in a package of 3 tablets. run a tablet on the clean cycle or on whitest whites or the longest cycle you can choose, use hot water and a second rinse option.
also to prevent this odor in the future make sure you are using only HE type soap and dont use too much. the least amount should do well to clean any clothes.

LG washing machine has AWFUL mildew smell

Same here. We bought ours January 2005. Love the machines and take great care of them, too. Then the smell in the washer which seemed to affect certain clothes, like thick sweat pants and t-shirts (they smelled really "sour"). After doing some searches I found on this site where someone had recommended using a product called Affresh. I figured I might as well try it since my other attempts failed. This really worked for me. I bought it at Home Depot for $7 for a pkg of 3. I used 3 tablets per their directions, as this was my first time using it (afterwards they recommend using only 1 tablet per month). I was totally amazed as the smell was gone. I hope it works for you, too!

Maytag HE 4t/ Kenmore Elite Smartwash Serial# CST0411376 MODEL# 11045088403 TYPE 199 712 CN/AP MY WASHER HAS A AWFUL ODOR INSIDE THE TUB. I HAVE CLEANED IT OUT WITH ALL KINDS OF CLEANERS TO TRY...

The following link provides guidance on how to maintain a front loader to keep the mold, mildew and odor away:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r513372-front_loader_mildew_odor

These are recommendations provided by the manufacturer. Most important of all, keep the rubber bellow clean and clear of debris and make sure you leave the door slightly open when not in use. This will minimize the build up of any mold or mildew and allow the tub to air out. The odor typically comes from the the residual water that stays in the wash tub under the basket and small articles of clothing getting stuck in the rubber folds of the door bellow. (I once found 17 socks stuck in a customer's washer and they wondered why it smelled so bad). NOTE: It is NORMAL to have residual water in the wash tub. If you do not routinely use a hot water setting, run the washer on a sanitary cycle about once a week, or so, with a small amount of bleach to get rid of any bacteria. Since some users conserve and only wash in cold water, they do not bacteria get rid of any bacteria inside the wash tub. I personally own one of these washers and have never had any odor or mildew problems in 8 years by following this simple advice. If you have any further questions/concerns please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Law Suit

I don't know anything about a lawsuit with LG but the proper solution to this is to have a qualified LG tech disassemble the washer drum and tub assembly and wash it down with a garden hose.  Once it is cleaned out, the smell is gone.  To avoid the smell from returning, do not put more than 2 tablespoons of detergent per wash.  The reason is that the washer can produce excessive sudsing and line it throughout the tub.  The front load washer cannot rinse this excess suds off by itself and will in time, cause that nasty odor again.
