Sony STR-DE 605 FLASHES PROTECTION ON READOUT

I get no sound or anything regardless of input.

  • trinketz Apr 13, 2009

I'm having the same problem with "protector" message.  When I power it up, it reads the frequency setting, and after a couple of seconds it flashes the protector message.  What gives?

To all users with this problem:

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

Connecting STR-DH100 and CDP-CX355 speakers

Hi Albert, test the STR-DH100, putting it into radio function, as long as you have an antenna connected, and test that there is sound, if there is sound, the amplifier works, if there is not, check the cables, connections and selection of speaker system
If you manage to have radio sound, then select the input where you connected the CDP-CX355, play some CD and it should be playing
If there is no sound, check the input where you connected it
I send you a link to the user manuals
Greetings Franco Dosil

The digital sound is off after 1 houre str de sony str de 485

It sounds like the receiver is either failing or going into a thermal protection mode.

There should be NO reason why the input source (digital versus analog) should make a difference unless you play the digital sources obscenely louder than the analog ones.

If you suspect heat, you should be able to feel it.

Can you verify that the digital sources ONLY do this?

Sony STR DE-445 unit powers up but no sound

Check the fuse, Sony is known for its random problems with sound. The one I have you must tap it on the side. Its a flicker switch inside.

Str de345 shuts down after a few and flashes (protection) on face of amp.

The Receiver is going into protection mode and possible some speaker cable might have touched the body or with each other.
Remove all inputs and outputs and then restart the receiver. If it starts then you are lucky and no further repair are required.
Connect all cable and wiring properly and ensure that they do not touch each other. You might have to reset the microprocessor also.

If the problem persist then let me know to further the trobleshooting.

Please do rate this solution and thanks for using FixYa.

Sony STR-D460Z receiver

A common cause are failures in the amplifier output stage, the drivers, and some of the support components. You will have to send the unit out for service.

Sony str-db940

Most likely a cold solder joint somewhere in the audio circuit. Most likely on the legs of the relay that turns the speakers on or off. Also check the connections at the audio outputs. Give it a good look over for bad solder connections, given the symptoms that's 98% likely to be the problem.
