Whenever I am trying to open the disc tray it just budges then stops. It doesnt opens at all. I have hit it a bit for it to open and it doesnt open completely when it does. I figured that something was wrong with the gear for the drive, I am not sure, butI would love to get some help and solve the problem. Thank You.
If you dont get the three red lights thats ok but if you have it stood up thats a killer to your xbox
so i layed mine down it doesn't make any funny noises anymore and my tray stopped jamming irs worked for a lot of people hope this advice helps
Short of taking it apart yourself, there isn't much you can do. The same thing happened to mine (I was also receiving the red rings). I sent mine back (due to the red rings)and they sent a new 360. If it is still under warranty, I highly suggest phoning Microsoft and explaining the situation. Also remember, if you are experiencing the red rings, Microsoft has extended the warranty to 3 years.

Try tapping above the disk drive or if that doesn't work open the tray take your disc out close the tray. open the tray put ur disk back in and close the tray again.
The way to fix this is to open the disk tray and blow inside for about thirty seconds getting the dust out of the way of the laser also blow across the disc tray and the surface of the disk. Then keep closing and opening the tray and it will start to read hopefully. if this does not work go out and buy a disc cleaner. it looks like a disc with sponges on it and when you insert it into the console it cleans the inside for you.

Try tapping above the disk drive or if that doesn't work open the tray take your disc out close the tray. open the tray put ur disk back in and close the tray again.
the button that can open the tray isnt powering correctly. but it could also be that if you have a disc in there that it would block it from opening if you have dropped it.
Well actually all these "fixes" are not the problem. One day a friends console got the open tray error. after cleaning and all that i found that did absolutly nothing. after taking the entire drive apart i found that the laser / moter assembly was offset. this ment that the disk was tilted 1degree towards the laser and intern hittng the laser assembly that so many peopl think is "laser burn" which actualy is the disk physically hitting the laser. how u fix this is as easy as adjusting two screws were the moter and the laser/ tray assembly meat. now thses arnt nomal phillips, flat head or torx scews. i found that stickin a drill bit in the screw head annd turnin it with some pliers did the trick. this fixes the open tray error for good unless the disk is causing it. IF anyone gets open tray ocasionally this should stop it for good.
The disc is dislodged and jamming the drawer. You have to remove the cover, about three, maybe four screws, and then take the disc out to resolve the problem.
How I worked around the "Open Tray"
problem, where the game discs were not being recognized:
1. Open tray
2. Unplug power cable while tray is open
3. Plug in power cable
4. Power on console - tray closes
5. Open tray
6. Insert disc
7. Try your game
Good luck!

Someone
else mentioned this in a forum somewhere, however I don't recall who it
was or which forum. I'm just trying to get the word out so people don't send in their XBOX for repair, or open the case and void the
warranty if this workaround resolves the problem.
if it won't open, turn off the console and remove the faceplate and try to eject the button. if it still won't open get a paper clip and straighten it out. you need to locate a small hole that exactly fits a straightened paper clip. it's located just below the silver lining of the disc tray about one and a half (1 1/2") inch from the left side of the disc tray. insert the paper clip into that hole and it should pop up the disc tray enough for you to be able to pull the disc tray all the way.
if it doesn't work there are still 2 more small holes that you can locate. the 2nd one is just beside the first hole and the 3rd one is just under the second X on the XBOX 360 text on the disc tray. try those two holes if the first hole doesn't work.
