Whirlpool dishwashers use a wax motor or a solinoid to release the door at a specific time during the cycle. So for proper cleaning the soap cup is nessesary . The part isn't that expensive and fairly simple repair.

Dishwasher Repair Problem Detergent Cup does not Open

Many dishwashing detergents need a water temperature of 140 degrees to dissolve. If your water is at the correct temperature, the only other suggestion I have is to make sure the detergent dispense is not blocked by large objects such as baking sheets, frying pans etc. If the dispenser cannot open fully, the detergent won't dissolve.
Also, you might want to check the sprayer arms. If they are clogged, they won't turn effectively. Sometimes debris will be pumped into the arms but the openings are too small to release the debris. You can remove the arms by removing the screw that hold them in place and then flush the arms with your sink sprayer. Then you can check the openings to see if there is any "crud" left in them. By crud, I mean small pieces of paper, bone fragments,

Hello laura.... there are three possible causes of the dispenser not opening:

1.Timer
On many dishwashers, a plastic actuator arm mechanically links the timer to the detergent cup. When the timer reaches the proper time in the cycle, the timer activates a lever that opens the detergent cup. If the linkage is broken or defective, the cup stays closed after you've closed it. Check the link and repair or replace it, as necessary. 2. Bi-metal switch or wax motor A bi-metal switch is a simple electrical device that deforms when electricity is applied to it. The degree of this deformation can be engineered to concise standards. The timer energizes the bi-metal switch inside your dishwasher door--directly behind the detergent cup--when the detergent cup should open. When energized, the bi-metal switch deforms away from the detergent cup latch, which opens the detergent cup. If the bi-metal switch is defective, it may not deform enough to open the cup. If that happens, you need to replace it. On some dishwashers, the bimetal switch is wired through the heating element or motor circuit. If the element is broken (or open), or if the motor is drawing low current because of a low-fill situation, the bi-metal switch doesn't open properly. Newer dishwasher models use a wax motor instead of a bi-metal switch. It's a sealed unit with wax that heats up and pushes a piston through to open the door. The wax motor, controlled by the timer, mechanically opens the door. 3. Detergent cup, itself The detergent cup itself can become clogged with old dried detergent that prevents it from opening. Sometimes just cleaning the cup takes care of the problem. If not, you probably need to replace the entire cup assembly That said, one way around this is to simply add the soap or the soap tab into the dishwasher proper, not into the cup. Try cleaning the compartment. If the latching is not OK, it could be a latch problem, or alignment, or total dispenser. Contact service provider for assistance.

make sure that the you let the hot water run for 2-3 min to make sure it is hot going into machine or it will not break down the soap.if the dispenser is opening then it is a tempproblem. let me know if my assistance was any help with a 4 thumbs up post

Sometimes this can keep the detergent door from operating properly. Consider switching detergents, as some liquids and pouch-style dish detergents can gum up the detergent dispensers. Also, make sure that there is nothing blocking the detergent door when the dishwasher is loaded. Because of the location of the detergent door, a large item such as a cookie sheet or a pan can prevent the door from opening. Run the dishwasher through a cycle without anything placed in front of the detergent dispenser and see if that solves the problem.
Broken Timer
2. KitchenAid dishwashers rely on an internal timer to complete the wash cycle properly. When this timer malfunctions, certain steps in the wash process (such as the release of soap from the detergent dispenser) can be interrupted. If the dishwasher detergent door is either not opening or appears to be opening late in the cycle, this is likely the mechanical culprit. Malfunctioning Door Components

If the particular model is newer and does not rely on a spring to open the door, chances are it either uses a wax motor or a bi-metal switch to release the detergent door at the appropriate time. If either of these components is dying, that can mean that the detergent dispenser will not operate properly.

The detergent cup can become clogged with old dried detergent that prevents it from opening at time. Sometimes just cleaning the cup takes care of the problem. The detergent cup opened by a bi-metal switch or a wax motor located inside your dishwasher door(behind the detergent cup). If cup's cleaning will not solve the problem, you should replace the bi-metal switch or the wax motor (depend which of them is used in your machine). Another option is just to place the detergent tablet on washer's bottom before starting its cycle. Good luck !
