If pictures are coming through to your screen, then the ribbon cable to the viewfinder has probably broken( they are quite brittle with age on this model). Can you see if it's broken when you hinge the viewfinder up? Replacement of the ribbon cable is the only viable option.
If only the viewfinder glass is broken, you can put other one to replace it.
It could be glass but I do recommend you to replaced with an acrilic or a plastic part.
You can get it from different soruces: Ebay from a broken camera (S2, S3 or S5), or use transparent plastic film and cut it to the right size.
You don't need to open the camera completely. You will need just to remove the viewfinder rubber protector, and carefully, pull the viewfinder frame that holds the glass. There are four plastic locking tabs (two up, two down).
first check the LCD connection, try to reconnect the flexible cables on the LCD board,
second, replace the flexible cable goes throungh hinge.
if those won't work, you may need to replace the LCD or main board.
If you turn on the back LCD, the electronic viewfinder will remain on while in a shooting mode. There is no setting on the camera to use only the back LCD monitor while shooting. If you playback images in the Play mode, only the LCD monitor will turn on. However, if you press the Monitor button while in the Play mode, than the back LCD monitor will turn off. The image will display only in the viewfinder LCD.
