I hope you folks can help. I have an ACER ASPIRE 6920 purchased in October 2008, so close to 5 months old now. Over the past month, my laptop has developed an extremely irritating problem. It doesn't sleep, doesn't hibernate, and won't shut down properly, unless I manually hold the button down. To explain further, when I use the sleep function the computer switches off (not the regular shutdown process, it doesn't even say computer shutting down), and then 5 seconds later, it will switch back on its own, with the windows error recovery saying, Windows was not shut down properly. When I try hibernating, the same thing happens. When I shut down, it will restart on its own again in 5 seconds, and won't switch off permanently unless I manually hold down the button. Of course, I should say other than this the computer works like a dream, however as my profession requires me to be quite mobile and flexible with my work, in addition to the responsibility of downloading important large tech presentations and documents as part of my job, the sleep function was very important to me, and is now effecting my efficiency. I would really appreciate your help.
I guess it would also be beneficial to let you all know, the things that I have already tried to rectify this problem. I have unchecked auto-restart, I have even gone to my device manager, and on all the power management tabs, I have made sure to uncheck enable this device to wake computer. However, the problem still persists. From what I have googled, the only thing I haven't yet done is go to BIOS settings, as to be quite honest I don't know how to get into BIOS settings for Acer.
Sorry for the long question. I thank all the experts for taking the time to read this, and I genuinely hope someone can help me.
Cheers,
Wasim
I dont quite know how far you got with some of the others as i have seen quite a few have tryed to help but can you just tell me if you got into either the bios sreen or the run function on your comp as i cant see what the other experts said only waht you said
Did u get your problem solved
Try this press this key when you see acer logo
F2 or F10 if this doesn't work try some of this combination
press and hold
Hi there.
Sounds like you need to perform a factory reset on the machine, if got no disks with the laptop when you got it new there will probably be a recovery partition on the hard drive (this partition could be hidden), you will need to back up any data before you perform a recovery as a recovery will mean you will loose a certain amount of data depending on if you have an option to perform a non destructive recovery (i would back data up anyway for piece of mind)
If it has a recovery partition try this >>>>>>
While the computer is starting up press ALT+F10
press enter at the "edit boot options" screen
select "restore to factory defaults"
Good luck and please post back with the results
You will need to take it to the service center of acer to get it repaired as its driver /software issue.and the settings are not getting set on the mode you want that has to be resolved. thanks.
Hello
Not sure if you have been able to sort out the problem. I have two solutions for you if you could try.
1. Download the file Combofix from the link below and ru it on your system. This is a great fix for viruse removal and registry fixes.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
2. Have you tried updating your BIOS? Download the new version of your BIOS from the link below under "BIOS and guides" and run it. Most Acers don't get shipped with the latest BIOS and hence have many problems. I work for an Acer Service centre and have noticed some of these problems.
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_6920G.html
If none of these fixes help, please send me a screenshot of your Latest Event viewer page. You can get it from Administrative told icon in your control panel
Ok please click start
In the search box type cmd
then in the command prompt box type this exactly
chkdsk C: /f /r
Then press enter, if you are asked about restarting press y and then enter
Then restart the machine and let chkdsk run
Once it is finished log in and run this program: Click Here
Remove anything it finds and then try to shutdown.
Hi,
i think you have been hit by a boot sector virus. all i can suggest is for you to reformat your laptop and install new operating system. i once had the same problem as yours before and believe me, i tried everything but nothing happened. so i come up to the idea of having a fresh installation of the OS..
I think your computer is virus infected scan your computer with latest update antivirus.
u can go to bios settings when upower up press "del" or F2 or F8to enter in bios settings.
Dear,
u have to reinstall the Windows and the way u should boot it from CD/DVD rom or if it doent work then u can also try with some USB source....means, the flash or usb drive...
download it from net to some other source and then boot it from the usb and then install windows from that source...
hope u understand the matter,
dont rate it until the issue resolves, ask further if required.....
regards,
dear,
are u there and working on someone's suggestion???
regards,
ok,
try and let me inform what happens after that then i will suggest more.
regards,
the best thing to save data in future is to make a ghost image on the D or E (if u have) drive with the help of norton ghost..
u can try it now also..
regards,

Try system restore. Go back to a restore point prior to when this startrd occuring. That might solve it.
Kurt
Hi! In your case I see that your having problem with your shutdown process. To solve this problem. RightCLICK in the desktop, click PROPERTIES, SCREENSAVER, POWER there you can find setting to solve, SHUTDOWN PROBLEM, HYBERNATION, SLEEP button
BIOS & CMOS Are different. BIOS is the order of things to come. CMOS is the computer talking to itself telling itself what to do with the information coming from the BIOS.
In the control panel, look under POWER MANAGEMENT for your hibernate, sleep, shutdown options. You probably have a conflict set up there. Just change things to what you want. There is basically NO CHANCE of ruining anything.
Hello,
Do you have all of your windows updates installed. Because in most cases the windows updates will take care of this issue.
It's possible there's a program running in the background that's not allowing your laptop to shut down normally, try running a full scan of your laptop to see if there's any problems, unfortunately you might have to reformat your laptop to fix the problem.
have you installed or downloaded anything new in the last month, try going to your task manager to see what programs are running in the background.
You can do this by hitting ctrl-alt-del ,your task manager should pop up giving you options, go to services it should show you whats running in the background.
If you find no processes running in the background that could cause this conflict with you laptop shutting down normally, you might have some missing or corrupt files in your registry, a reformat may be the only way to fix this problem.
×
Have you tried, while in Windows, Holding the Fn key and pressing F4? This should put the computer in sleep mode. Tapping F2 when the computer powers on should put you into CMOS settings, which is the BIOS settings - BIOS is the computer's settings, or pre-operating operating system, CMOS refers to the actual hardware that stores these settings - it's essentially referring to the same thing with two different acronyms. Try the Fn + F4 thing in Windows and tell me what happens!
It sounds like the Windows ACPI (power management) drivers may have become corrupt. Reinstalling the drivers for this might help - you'd need a recovery CD for this. You can go to Device Manager and try this. Also, please make sure you don't have anything external plugged into the laptop when you try sleeping - nothing except the laptop itself.
Wasim,
I don't know if your computer has a recovery partition, but if you have a second hard drive listed (D or E) that doesn't seem to hold anything, that may be it. You can try updating your ACPI drivers from that drive - other than that, you need a CD with the Vista drivers. Good luck!
Wasim, I can't say I'm an expert on this part... First, get into Device Manager, go to Computer, and look for ACPI. Then try the Roll Back Driver button - you may not be able to do that. Then try "Update Driver', and let it do an automatic search. If that doesn't work, try Update Driver and try Install from a specific location, on the next screen, choose the drive leter (D:\) It may find it, or not, if it does, let it install.
Okay, this is right from your manual, on page 72.
In order to reinstall drivers or reset to factory defaults, you have to make the cd/dvds first, and then use them to recover/restore stuff. Try making the drivers/applications disk firstt, and recover the ACPI drivers, and maybe even all your hardware drivers. If that fails, you can make the Factory defaults disk, boot with it, and recover your system. If you are going to do that, make sure you back up all important data first!!
Hope this helps, good luck!

Before reinstalling the windows I say that you must reinstall the mother board driver.
Download and install this driver : http://downloadmirror.intel.com/16023/a08/infinst_autol.exe
Now, after installing go to power setting and have a look at the setting, and make sure that all of then are correct. If you are using Hot keys to hibernate and all, reinstall its driver too.
You will get it here : ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_6920G/vista/Drivers/LaunchManager_Dritek_Kilimanjaro_v2.0.00_Vistax32x64_XPx32x64.zip
If you dont know how to edit the BIOS setting don't do it. Any wrong changes can cause permanent damages to hardware.
Good Luck.
One of the first step (as noted in your user manual) is to make a cd or dvd from the virgin computer when you first turn it on. All the recovery and O/S files are on a partition of your HDD.
You should reinstall Windows using the repair function.
Also, please check that there are no programs running in the background besides your antivirus software.
START > RUN > type msconfig >and click on the STARTUP tab.
UNcheck everything except the antivirus software and then click APPLY, and Shut down the Laptop.
When it starts, let it sit and hybernate as normal.
I have a hunch there is a conflict of programs running in the background that doesnt like to hibernate - so the computer hangs up.
If this still doesnt work - a repair for your OS is required.
Thanks for using FixYa!!
To get into BIOS
You can access the BIOS Setup Utility by pressing CTRL+ALT+ESC as the system is booting. At the bottom of the second start up screen you should see "To enter setup, press CTRL_ALT_ESC.
Thanks.
ften the BIOS and CMOS can be confused because instructions may either indicate to enter the "BIOS Setup" or the "CMOS Setup". Although the setup for BIOS / CMOS is the same, the BIOS and CMOS on the motherboard are not.
If you have already read the above BIOS and CMOS definition links you should now know that the BIOS and CMOS are two different components on the motherboard. The BIOS on the motherboard contains the instructions on how the computer boots and is only modified or updated with BIOS updates, the CMOS is powered by a CMOS battery and contains your system settings and is modified and changed by entering the CMOS Setup.
Although the setup is often referred to as the BIOS and CMOS setup, we suggest you only refer to the setup as "CMOS Setup" as it is more appropriate. Computer Hope often refers to the setup as BIOS and CMOS Setup to help users who are looking for one instead of the other.
Do let me know if you need any help.
Thanks.
Do let us know the solution. We really appreciate your feedback!!!!!!
There is one more reason we can suspect. If there is bad registry file or index, it will not allow you to shut down the pc escially Vista ( I am also working on Vista ).
There is one more trick we can do.
You might need to spend few bucks.99% i am sure it would solve the issue.
Go to
http://www.download.com
Than , download software - Registry Mechanic.
trial one.
Install, restart the pc.
Run the software. You would be able to see the errors.
If you find plenty of them, you can purchase the license.
Thanks.
You need to purchase a license for the same.
Once you purchase that, it would remove all the errors. Usually whenever you install any program, the registries of the programme are added to notebook. Even if you uninstall them, they still remain in the system.
Usually drive C, programme files folder.
On addition of all these files, processing would be difficult, internet speed goes down, you might need to restart the pc and the shut off goes on and on ...never ending story
hey i have an IDEA - Windows restore option
Wow!!! i forgot that. That would bring the laptop to the initial stage.
Go to start.
Than accesories.
There would be an option for run command.Click that.
A black window would open. Type rstrui.exe and press enter.
Restore your notebook to the previous date.
Thanks and hey don't forget to change my rating to Fixya if your issue would be resolved,
Thanks.
Thats a software that would remove all the bugs and helps you to increase speed and remove all these issue's.
However, before that try the windows restore option.
Lets see if that would work and solve the issue because what i suspect all this errors are only due to addition of additional softwares or malfunctioning of them. This is common error on most of the operating system escially Vista.
Thanks.
And always make sure, you do not have to download all the updates. There are some patches that would even make your pc worse. So., always selective to download latest updates untill and unless its related with the security of the pc/notebook.
thanks.
Than do try that software.
registry mechanic.
that's the only one unless you might need to reinstall the operating system.
Thanks.
Wasim do not uninstall any device drivers if you do not have CD for Vista.
You might corrupt windows and might lose all data.We generall go for this partition ( Magic Partition) in case you want to save data. We transfer all required data in empty driver and format Drive C ( Usually for Windows Vista Files ).......
Turn off nVidia Driver Helper service. Its known to cause shut down problems. Turning it off doesn’t appear to hurt anything.
I think this will work
Select Start
Search services.msc
Locate the nVidia Driver Helper item and right click it.
Select Properties
Set the startup value of the service to “Manual” or “Disabled”.
After this update the BIOS.
The procedure would be

BIOS is the same thing as CMOS settings.
I suggest going into the power settings in vista and making sure its doing what you want. it sounds like it switched power schemes...
Dear wasimparkar, Sat. March 21, 2009 9:08PM EST USA
I read @ http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/680948.htm near the bottom that a Sony program on someone's computer caused the same problem and the Sony usb video connection software had to be removed. You can read more at the link above.
If you use this software it may be your problem also.
Meantime, I'll keep searching.
jackiaria
Why don't you re-install the OS, and if use the recovery CD that belongs to your laptop, be sure that you installed drivers correctly. So make a back-up from your files and re-install your OS. I suggest you also to use Symantic products in order to Optimize your laptop, its product to scan your hardwares and softwares will help you to solve the problem. So do this before re-installing the OS, if it couldn't help you then re-install the OS and install the drivers.(I strongly suggest you to install from recovery cd) and if none of Fixya experts could help you it's better to be in touch with Acer support part, and get the best way and answer from them. Good luck
Take a look to this link, maybe it's the best expert for solve your problem!

Good luck
Dear Wasimparkar, I don't know about Acer's BIOS setting, so I just pray for you to solve the problem, here! :)
Unplug the battery from laptop and plug it again, did you test it?!

You need to get into your BIOS and be sure that the power saving mode is set to S1 . there is alot of documentation (even by Microsoft - Vista issues) about S3 use and sleep mode, crashes, etc .. If you BIOS is set to S3 and you are trying to use standard sleep/hibernate routines .. they don't work properly
Hi,
I think it will be worth you re-installing the OS Vista again. I agree this is OS issue.
Thanks.
5 Months old Laptop, it should still be under warranty! it maybe worth sending it back?
Thanks.
Yeah it should accept the same key's for the office you already have. Get them to repair it without curropting the Harddisk and the OS. you will find the will just update the bios and then return it you all working. They mayeven go as far as giving you free software or the troubles.
Good Luck,
Thanks.

If you have the OS disk with you do a repair of the OS.
let me know the OS, will help you with the steps how to repair!
To repair windows Vista the easy way simply hit the windows start button on the bottom left and in the search box type RESTORE and
you’ll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu. Now
just select system restore and then the date you would like to restore
your computer back to. Go back to a date when your computer was
functioning just fine. If the issue has just started I recommend going
back at least 2 weeks. The dates you can revert back to will be in bold. choose the data system was working fine. let me know the status ...kevin
Press F2 to enter BIOS.
While booting, on the acer logo screen (first screen) on the bottom of the screen, the keys to enter the BIOS is mentioned.

Check that is not the battery going down.
Check that is not the battery loosing charge and forcing the laptop to shut down, or a bad connection to power adapter.
Try also reinstalling the system, a corrupted Windows can force system to hybernate or shutdown.
Your Acer Aspire has Empowering Technology Energy Management, this will bypass Windows power settings and is not managed by bios.
Follow instructions at page 71/72 on the manual below to sort out power settings.

I am sorry, this is not power related or battery related. This keeps happening irrespective of where I am, whether I am on battery power, or regular power, at home, or at office. This is obviously a BIOS or software problem.
the OS is Windows Vista.
well, any suggested solutions. One gentleman said they will give the steps to repair, after I mention the OS, I did, its Microsoft Vista.
How can I reinstall Vista, I don't have the CD, it never came with the purchase. Does anyone not know how to get into ACER BIOS settings?
crazytreen, I agree with you. However, I don't know how to get into bios settings for my ACER Aspire 6920. Kevin, thanks for your suggestion, however I did try system restore already, just a week after this problem, but doing system restore didn't solve the problem unfortunately. Does anyone know how to get into ACER bios, so I can do as crazytreen suggested to check my S1 and S3.
Fardinfard, thanks for your suggestion. However, I want to do a re-install only as the last option. I just want one attempt to get into Acer Bios. Considering my ACER Aspire was in fixya's drop down menu, I assumed there would be an expert that is familiar with this system. And if there is, then surely they could direct me to get into ACER's bios?
jackiaria, I have also read this particular forum. Thank you for your suggestion, unfortunately this isn't the problem as I don't use that software. Trust me, I googled a whole set of solutions before coming to fixya :) Thanks for everybody's suggestions. Its great to see so many people helping, however, what I would really like to know more than anything else, is how can one get into BIOS settings for ACER ASPIRE 6920? This is the one solution that I haven't tried.
djicenova, I have checked the settings thousands of time to make sure they haven't switched the functions of the power button. This isn't the problem. Thanks though.
I have pressed f2 to enter bios, but it doesn't, it enters CMOS settings.
crayzeetrayn, your solution seems the most plausible, I am going to try it. As you suggested, I checked to see if hybrid sleep is turned off, and it is. So now my only hope is basically to see if power saving in BIOS is S1. I will try control alt and esc together to get into BIOS. Someone mentioned CMOS is the same as BIOS, but how come there is nothing in my CMOS in regards to power saving, or waking up on LAN?
you say CMOS is the same as BIOS, yet my CMOS doesn't have any settings except BOOT settings.
okay, I am going to try this
it only says f2 and f12 for boot options, nothing about bios.
I think all of you are great, and I appreciate your help. but nothing seems to work. Looks like I am going to have to resort to waiting long while talking to ACER people on the phone.
okay, I will try again.
arjun, thanks this is a solution that I haven't heard before, something different. Will try it.
finally, some acer specific solutions. I am getting more hopeful.
will let of all you know of the right solution. I think this is an excellent forum. Even if nothing eventually works, I really appreciate how genuine and helpful you all have been.
johncaman, I tried what you suggested fn and f4, unfortunately the same thing, doesn't sleep, just switches off, and within 5 seconds, restarts with windows error recovery asking me if I want to start windows normally or in safe mode
Arjun, I tried your solution, with so much hope, it didn't work :(. I am gutted. This sucks, a company like Acer, 5 month new laptop and this problem. I am so angry, not at this forum, at my bloody laptop.
if registry mechanic points the errors, how does it fix them?
maybe I should check to see if there are unknown processes running.
to 'The Experts', I am confused by your proposed solution, in Vista, there is no run from the start menu, I tried looking for inside run, but couldn't find it.
I know, it still is under warranty. Its just the irritation of reinstalling everything you know. Its such a headache, after you have done so much work on it. I mean, I might have reinstall MS Office 2007 again, will they accept the same key, I used the first time. So many other things. Yuck :(. By the way guys, all of you, I am really thankful, and I do apologize for my grumpy attitude.
thanks john. I don't know if I have a recovery CD, I will search for it. there is no other way to re-install ACPI drivers?
so taran, are you suggesting, that even if registry mechanic fixes this problem, it will actually end up slowing down my computer?
yes I do, have all my windows updates installed.
I have tried everything under power management in the control panel, all in vain.
i have tried the restore method tons of times.
uhhm, thats too basic, it doesn't provide the solution
yes, you're right, sending it to them now seems like the best bet. So, you actually think it possible for them to fix this without affecting files, documents and software installed on my hard drive?
i thought we usually don't have a choice when downloading updates.
I am willing to accept help through remote. My email is [email protected]
you're probably right. I am resigning myself to either a reformat, or sending it to the acer losers. :(
meanwhile folks, just a suggestion, since all of you have been so great, and I think this a very helpful website, I think it would be a good idea for the designers of the website, to enable users like me to actually see all the responses of the experts all the time, it slightly baffling, why all the suggestions from the experts are not viewable like regular replies. Just my suggestion. and something to take my mind off my dastardly notebook
so 'the experts', are you still willing to help me through remote assistance?
its all gone silent. Well, in that case, I do appreciate all of you taking the patience to help me. I tried everything but nothing worked, but all of you are extremely nice, and this is a great website. I do apologize if I came across as excessively grumpy. Good luck to all of you, and Thank you all so much for your help.
Cheers,
Wasim
john, I actually do have a d drive partition with absolutely nothing in it. How do I use it to restore?
okay, I have tried system restore, no luck. I am interested in John's suggestion of restoring from D drive.
thanks, I might try it.
okay, will try this as well.
thanks for your assistance. we will set up a time for remote assistance.
thanks john.
okay, will run the latest scan.
possibly true.
'the experts' I do have MSN, I have emailed you my msn
okay, will try this as well.
thanks shakil, will try. however, the acer page link you have suggested is for the aspire 6920 g, is this the same as the 6920?
thanks
thanks john
yes, I am trying different solutions. So far nothing has worked, making backups right now, just in case I have to reinstall vista
probably true
thanks, Ultimately sadly, its something I just have to solve with Acer. Thanks for all the help guys, even though nothing worked, I appreciate the genuine attempts to help. Cheers.
okay, thanks everyone. Believe it or not, I even formated, and re-installed Vista, and the problem hasn't gone!! Off to acer now :(
I used acer erecovery, no luck.
both these links don't solve my problem. I am sending it to Acer tonight or tomorrow most probably. You guys don't have to worry about this anymore.
I restored even the bios to its defaults, just to make sure if it had changed on its own, the problem still persists.
no, the problem isn't solved.
no luck, thanks everyone for the millionth time, you folks needn't worry anymore, as I have arranged with Acer to have it looked at, as the laptop is only 5 months old, and still under warranty.
please go ahead and restart your computer and now the computer will shutdown and at the beginning of the reboot keep on tapping the F8 or del key now you will get into the cmost setup
orself
in the windows mode got the run inside th run type cmd now you will get the command prompt inside the command prompt type chkdsk /f/r it is check disk it will ask you to restart the computer and if you restart your computer means it will start automatically and it will check for the bad sectors and it will fix it...
thanks,
karun
